The Common Room / Surname Variant - KENNAGHAN
« on: Tuesday 02 March 10 19:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could suggest surname variants for the name KENNAGHAN.  I have been searching for the death of an ancestor with this surname but I am aware that it could be just about anything which has been mistranscribed.

I have tried
  • KENNAGHAN
  • KERNACHAN
  • CARMACHAN
  • KERNIGHAN
  • CORRIGAN

Any more suggestions?

All help gratefully appreciated :)

Cheers,
Clare

Angus (Forfarshire) / Prisons and Papers in Dundee - 1867
« on: Tuesday 02 March 10 19:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

From a trip to the Scotland's People centre in Edinburgh today, I discovered that one of my BRUFF relations committed suicide in prison in Dundee in 1867.

I can see another trip to Edinburgh on the cards to go to the National Archives to see the court records to find out the nature of her crime but I was wondering if anyone could help on the following:

 - What prison in Dundee would a woman be in around 1867?
 - What Dundee newspapers were in print at the time and where are there archives?

All help gratefully received!

Thanks,
Clare

Kinross-shire / Re: OWENS family

Hi Lucan,

From looking at the map you have attached, Rantrie Know seems like a via option - thanks :-).  I have seen many 'mistranscriptions' of place names over the years.

However - if that is still in Fossoway and Tullibole parish, then I would expect to find the details of the baptisms in that parish's OPRs.  So either the births were not registered or weren't registered at a Church of Scotland church or they moved into that area just before the 1841 census.

Cheers,
Clare

Fife / BETT/BEAT of Leuchars and Forgan
« on: Saturday 30 January 10 14:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I was wondering if anyone out there has any links to the following BETT/BEAT family from NE Fife?

Parents - John BETT (or BEAT) and Ann(e) ROBERTSON m1873 in Leuchars, Fife.

Children:
Robert b.1784 in Leuchars
William b.1786 in Leuchars
John b.1788 in Leuchars
Anne b.1789 in Forgan
John b.1792 in Forgan
David b.1794 in Forgan
Alexander b.1797 in Forgan
Bell b.1801 in Forgan
Helen b.1803 in Forgan

I am descended directly from David Bett (b.1794) so have quite a bit of info on his descendants.  But would be interested if anyone has info on his siblings or parents.

I have a couple of leads on the parents that I am starting to follow up on.

All help gratefully appreciated!  :)

Cheers,
Clare

Hi Alan,

Yes - that is my line.  I am directly descended from William and Catherine/Christian.  I have managed to amass most of the info from the date of their marriage onwards - it was always William's parents that I had trouble confirming.  I am led to believe that pre-1800 Castleton records are 'patchy' :)

Lanarkshire / Re: Dennistoun M I's
« on: Tuesday 05 January 10 21:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

I live in Dennistoun but for the life of me, I can't think of seeing a graveyard here.  All the local churches are surrounded by tenements as far as I know.

There is a list of cemeteries in Glasgow here - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/LKS/cemeteries-gla.html

I think the closest ones would be...
Calton, Riddrie and the Necropolis.

However, if you know the name of the churchyard you are looking for, I can try to track it down at the weekend and look for the stones for you  :)

Cheers,
Clare

Scotland / Re: Brickwall - searching SP
« on: Monday 04 January 10 21:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

There are a couple of things I have tried in the past...

Have you tried using wildcards in the surname rather than soundex?  For instance, searching for M*kinlay will search for McKinlay and MacKinlay

Another one I have found successful is putting the birth year in as well, so at least you know you'll be getting people of the correct age (you can set it to search for a few years either side).

The only other thing I can suggest is to look outside of Caithness in case they had moved.

Sorry I'm not more help  :(

Cheers,
Clare

Roxburghshire / Re: Descendants of Thomas Storie 1842 & Jane Hendry.
« on: Thursday 31 December 09 16:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

So...

Thomas (b.1842) & Jane Hendry had the following children, for which you are searching descendants?

- Thomas b.1879 d. 1931
     m. Isabella Graham
      - Thomas b. 1901
- Elizabeth b.1881
- Helen b.1883
- George b.1885
- John b.1887

The images for marriage certificates now go up to 1934 on the Scotland's People site, so you should be able to find all/any marriages that occurred in Scotland on there.  It also has the images for death certs  up to 1955 so again, there is a good chance that you will find some of them there.  Searching for a death for the daughters will throw up any spouses names.

Of course, access to the 1911 census would help greatly too!  But you'll have to wait at least another year for that!

As for my Elliots & Croziers - I don't have any connection to the Glendinnings at all yet.  I do have a connection to a Jackson though.  My GGGG Uncle William Elliot married an Elizabeth Jackson in 1870.  She was the daughter of Robert Jackson and Margaret Hutton.  And in spite of searching, I have yet to come across anyone researching the same Elliot line as me.  I guess that shows just how many there were in Castleton in the 1800s!

Cheers,
Clare
