US Lookup Requests / Re: Samuel Charles Owen Foreman
« on: Sunday 19 October 08 09:56 BST (UK)  »
To start with, there is a tree on Ancestry with him in it. I don't know if it's your tree or not.

If I have found the right passenger record, it is Samuel C O Foreman aboard the Arizona reaching NY on 17 april 1893. He is 26, a mason. This might not be the right guy, or it could be filled out wrong, but if I am reading it right, it says he is a citizen of the US but born in England, and he is heading to Cleveland. There's a starting point. Let me see if I can find him in the 1900 census.

I agree. I think it was not from war injuries, but he received a military service because he had been in the military. I don't know much about military ranks. Could it have been a special one of some sort, due to his age and desire to be in the military?

What a fascinating story. And so sad. This is definitely a Rootschat challenge if I ever saw one. I had a quick look around, but not very familiar with Welsh records. I wonder if this might not be a fun thread for the Welsh boards.

The Common Room / Re: Any Tips For Searching For Living Relatives
« on: Thursday 16 October 08 10:49 BST (UK)  »
With the mother's death date, can you find an obituary for her that might list living relatives? You could also find where she was buried, or the church she attended. They legally can't give out information on living people I am sure, but they might be able to forward your information on to anyone.

And also, have you checked on Ancestry for trees with the mother's name in it?

That is just beautiful. I know there are several sites that do this and I have thought to do it for trips or events, but not family history. What a wonderful keepsake. I will have to look into this.

The problem for me becomes organizing. How did you decide which branches, or did you put all branches?

The Common Room / Re: Why change her name?

Wow, fascinating. I know you don't have the records, but do you think it could be a baptismal thing? My grandmother was Marion, and her baptismal record lists her as Marion Ruth, but my mother says her first name was really Thadeus, but there was some issue with the church not accepting that name. I haven't gotten her birth cert yet, but it makes life interesting.

I just found this thread, and it is fascinating. Good work Rootschatters, and welcome Jellybaby. What a great find for you. I agree I would have a hard time parting with it cymbeline, but remember, what comes around goes around, and hopefully your turn will come.  :)

The Common Room / Re: Family Graves
« on: Sunday 12 October 08 11:20 BST (UK)  »
I went to a cemetery where three of my gg grandparents are buried, along with a couple infants from different generations. The caretaker told me as family, I could be buried there, as there is room (after a certain number of years, graves can be used again?). And then I found out my mom's cousin has the title for the one plot. His mom gave it to him, saying to just bury her there so he wouldn't have to worry about what to do when she was gone (he didn't).
