Armed Forces / Joseph Newton born 1785 in Leicester Militia Regiment
« on: Monday 20 July 20 16:45 BST (UK)  »
Joseph was born in Leicester St Mary (de Castro) on 29th November 1785. He enlisted in the Leicester Reg of Militia on 11.3.1803 at the age of 17 age for life and served 11 years 137 days as a drummer or a trumpeter. He then served 14 years 333 days as a corporal before being discharged on 26th June 1829 due to reduction in the regiment, I think.

I believe he returned to Leicester St Mary and worked as a framework knitter until he died in September 1939. Can't decide if he was married or not.

It looks like he was a chelsea pensioner with 14and eleven twelfths service under C and 11 and five twelfths under D equalling 26 and 4 twelfths less 1 year underage service

On the record card there is a large number 5 written but I can't decipher the rest and wondered if anyone could help me put this record into some sort of sensible order please.

Any help will be most gratefully received. Thanks in advance
June

Many thanks BumbleB and Annie65115 for the information. I can now confirm some births/baptisms and enter some burial details to my family records plus some addresses. I'll check out some of the names I think belong to our family group too. Your help is much appreciated.

If anyone can actually find a suitable candidate for Hannah Grant I'd also be really grateful. I just can't find a birth that seems to fit in. :-\

Thanks for replying Annie65115. Sorry, I must have been typing without my brain in gear with those dates.

Samuel Robert was christened 21st April 1866 at St George. I have a birth date of 16th April 1864 for him though this comes from a family member so can't confirm it.

According to the details I've seen his first wife Ann Ballard died in 1888 leaving him with two young sons. He married Matilda Simpson in 1891.

For Matilda I have a birthdate of 1867, not confirmed

Matilda and Samuel are buried in plot L232 at Gilroes on 7.8.1911 and 8.2.1918 respectively

Samuel the younger was christened on 8.21.1834 at St Mary de Castro. I have no evidence of his birthdate other than a date given to me by another family member.

Emma, nee Watts, appears to have been born C1867

I have the details of their burials in 1915 and 1911 as being in plot L300 at Gilroes. I think Willsy found those for me.

Samuel the elder was christened at St Mary de Castro on 6.1.1799, the birth date from my family member was given as 2.1.1799

I have his death as 1858 but no further details.

I have no details at all for Hannah Grant.

I didn't have Thomas nor did I have William, the children born in 1839 and 1825 respectively so will enter them on my list. Many thanks for that.

I'd be very grateful for any information you can share with me for any of these family members it would be a great help. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply,

Kind regards,
June

Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can tell me if I'm missing something here. In a previous post I was looking at my maternal great grandfathers family After deciphering several incorrect listings for names I think I have the following facts.

My Great grandfather was Samuel Robert Newton b 16.4.1834 in Leicester. He was married twice and I descend from his second wife.

My Great Great Grandfather was Samuel Newton born 8.1.1834 in Sanvey Gate and christened at St Mary de Castro. Samuel married Emma Watts. Emma died in 1911 and Samuel died in 1915  both at 2 Bay street, Leicester where they lived with their daughter Adelaide Hood formerly Bee, formerly Butt (separated from husband and remarried shortly after his death in 1890s)nee Newton
The only problems I had here was the complete mixing up of some family names on a census return or two among which was the fact that Emma was listed as Elizabeth. Think I've straightened all that out now.

Now I come to my Great Great Great Grandfather SAMUEL NEWTON b: 1799 in Leicester and married in 1816/17/19 to HANNAH GRANT
No idea why there are 3 marriage records but I assume the marriages were stopped as they were minors.
Anyway, moving on to 1820 and beyond Samuel and Hannah had at least 7 children.
Joseph b 1820 and Harriet b 1822 Horse Pool St in Leicester both christened at St Mary de Castro. (No idea where Horse Pool Street was.) However, Joseph's mother was listed as HANNAH and Harriet's mother was listed as ANN
Frederick b 1826, Selina b 1828 and Ann b 1831 in Oxford St, Leicester  with the mother's name for Frederick and Selina (who was christened SALINA) being ANN whilst Ann's mother was HANNAH
Great Great Grannddad Samuel was born in Sanvey gate in Leicester in 1834 and christened at St Margaret His mother was HANNAH
Joseph (number 2) was also born in Sanvey Gate and Christened at St Margaret in 1837 and his mother's name was ANN

So I'm thinking that Ann may have been a pet name for Hannah  but although I can find their crazy assortment of marriage dates, (All of which are for the 8th of February in each year.) I can find no trace of a Hannah Grant who seems a likely candidate for the post of my Great Great Great Grandmother.

There seems to be dozens of Samuel Newtons around and I've struggled to separate mine out and I know that my Great Great Great Great granddad is also a Samuel Newton but can't trace a wife for him yet but if anyone can spot something I've missed, find some dates of death or throw any light on either of the missing grandmothers I'd be most grateful.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

June.

Ah, I see, thanks Annie65115. So as Samuel and Emma claimed to have had 7 children, 4 of whom had died, I think it makes it quite possible that James Newcombe was, in fact, James Newton. How sad to lose so many children in infancy. It happened in most families, I know but it makes me realise how lucky we are these days.

Many thanks Annie65115 and Willsy, that is very helpful and gives me some great information.

The lodging house is one building opened in 1889 and run by the same family until it closed in 1946. According to the only information I can find it is at No: 55 Britannia Street (I think it is now a listed building.)
From the photograph I have of it I think it possibly had a coach arch and it is possible it part of the ground floor could have been a shop with living quarters. The numbers don't match but it could be that Britannia Street was lengthened at some point and the building was renumbered to fit in with that.

I didn't have all the names of the children so that's a huge help thanks and the burials are also very helpful. I also think that James Newcombe might be James Newton, it would be easy so confuse the two names. Does a coroner's warrant mean it was a suspicious death?
I wonder if Robert Watts might be Emma's nephew so will look into that too.

I'm really surprised that Samuel Robert was actually registered as Sam, He was definitely christened as Samuel and has always been referred to by my grandma as Samuel so I imaging she didn't know either.

I think I now have this Samuel fairly well sorted out. I'll be able to get started on his father next. :)

Leicestershire / Trouble with my Samuel Newtons

It seems that my Grandma's father was named after his father, who was named after his father, who was named after his father, who was named ... well basically I have at least 4, maybe 5 Samuel Newtons stretching back from my great granddad, who helpfully was named Samuel Robert Newton.
Samuel Robert was born to Samuel Newton and Emma Watts around 16th January 1866, he was baptised in 21st January of that year along with his siblings.

So, I'm filling in an information sheet on Samuel Newton who was possibly christened on 8th January 1834
by the Age of 7, Samuel was in the Blaby Union Workhouse with his parents and siblings (I have to sort out issues with them too but my mind can only cope with one problem at a time.)

In 1851 they were living at Dryden Street

In 1856 (22nd September to be exact, which is actually my 89 year old dad's birth day.)Samuel married Emma Watts at St Mary de Castro in old Leicester

By 1861/71 Samuel and Emma were at 43, Wheat Street.

In 1881 however, Samuel has moved to the house next door (45) but his wife is listed as Elizabeth
There is a name error on this census return as his married daughter Adelaide and her husband George Butt are living with them but Adelaide is listed as Ann. (Ann was already married to William Bee by this time.

By 1891 The census return is very mixed up. Samuel is listed as his son, Samuel Robert. His wife Elizabeth is still there, as is Adelaide, who is now a widow, and her son. Samuel Robert, the real one, is listed as Thomas R. He is also widowed. He has two sons from this first marriage. Thomas R is actually Thomas William and Samuel W is actually Samuel Robert (the second)

1901 vsees Samuel living at 25 Brittannia Street, Leicester (Model Lodging House) which I understand to have been a lodging house for up to 129 working men living in large communal bedrooms. The only problem is that Samuel's wife is living with him and this time she's back to being Emma. Samuel is a general shopkeeper

by 1911 Samuel and his wife, who is still Emma, are living with their daughter, Adelaide Hood , who has remarried for a third time and has rather carelessly lost her third husband too.  On this census return Samuel and Emma have been married for 54 years and have had 7 children, only 3 of whom are still living. (One of them being my great granddad.

I can't find anything about the death of an Elizabeth Newton and am left wondering if somehow, for whatever reason, Emma became Elizabeth for up to 10-20 years. Also, why would Emma be living at the model lodging house if it was for men only?

I'd love some ideas to play around with if anyone can suggest anything.  Thanks in advance.

June
