Europe / Re: Passenger Lists
« on: Monday 17 October 11 20:56 BST (UK)  »
Thank you so much for that. Wish they'd given a full name!

Ludwig MEINECKE was a bird dealer on the 1881 and 1891 census.
His sister Freideike (who I thought might be the 'F' on the passenger list) is listed as 'Wife of GIESLER a Bird Dealer', on her death certificate.

I wonder if this 'F' from Rotterdam is her or another sibling.

One more bit of information to add to the jigsaw!  Could I ask where you found this information?

Thank You,
Gill

Europe / Passenger Lists
« on: Monday 17 October 11 20:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
Is there anywhere else apart from 'ancestry' that has passenger lists/ships crews/alien arrivals?

I am trying to find out when my MEINECKE ancestors came into the country from Germany. I have searched on and off for quite some while now when I discovered that a F Meineicke arrived in Hull (England Alien Arrivals). This just could be a link.

I am looking for a Ludwig Meinecke (b. 1831) and his wife Beta (there is a Liva arrived in Hull on the Hamburg passenger list??). Also sister Freiderike, mother Johanna (b. abt 1790) and daughter Johanne (b. 1855). Freiderike married a Geisler.
German links are from Bremen. Later finds have them linked to Hull, Yorkshire, but daughter Johanne married in London.

I have found these tentative links on ancestory, but have been unable to view any details. Just wondered where else to look.

gill

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Re: SIDDA - South Leverton
« on: Thursday 23 December 10 14:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi John,
Sidda is a name from my husband's side of the tree. I have done very little in the way of research for a while now. Just starting to get my information into some sort of order again. I had come to the end of my relationship with my first piece of family history software, (was having more problems than it was worth) and have lots of bits of paper that need sorting. I have bought new software and am starting to sort out all the information.
I have just about sorted my side of the family and hope to turn to my husband's side in the new year.
As for the Siddas, I have Ann Sidda who married Thomas Briggs on 21st June 1824 in Edwinstowe, Notts. On my first enquiry  in Roots Chat in 2006, I was sent details about other Siddas in the area, but, as yet, have not researched any further ancestors.
Do you have an Ann Sidda in your tree born about 1800?
I would be very grateful of any information you have, and will inform you of anything I discover, when I sort out the information.

Regards, Gill

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Re: THE MOUNT HESSLE
« on: Friday 19 November 10 19:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
Thank you very much for your interest and information.
My aunt, born and bred in Hull lived all the time i knew her in Leeds. I always wondered why she moved to Leeds when there were no family there. I had been eagerly awaiting the release of the 1911 census, hoping it may have given some clues. As it happened, it only gave her at The Mount!
Very tentative, I know, but I wonder if the Leeds link with Liet Colonel J H Burstall is any more than a coincidence. If he had another home there, maybe she moved in service.??

Thanks again
regards
Gill

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / THE MOUNT HESSLE
« on: Thursday 18 November 10 21:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I'm just getting around to sorting out information that I found a while ago but haven't got on my family tree yet.
I have information regarding my great aunt on the 1911 census; she was a housemaid at The Mount, Hessle, Yorkshire.
The informatiom I have gives the name of four servants and I am assuming that this is only part of the household. Does anyone have the full details of the household. I would be interested to see it. But mainly I would like to know what sort of a household it was. I have been unable to find any mention of The Mount on other censuses. There is a school called Hessle Mount, I believe, today, and I wonder if it always been a school and if it is the same place.
My great aunt was Louie ASSERT (altho' noted as Louisa on the 1911 census)

Thanks and Regards
Gill

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / 1841/1851 Look up please HODGE
« on: Sunday 19 September 10 15:57 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone please do a look up for my ancester in he censuses.
I am desperate to find out some information about him and have not been able to.
He is JAMES HODGE.
His son William Hodge was born in North Cave, nr Hull, Yorkshire in 1831, so assume they lived around that area. william's marriage certificate gives his father's occupation as Miller.
That's all I have!

Any help would be gratefully received.

Gill

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Family Tree Maker
« on: Thursday 12 August 10 19:45 BST (UK)  »
I have used the Family Search PAF program for quite a number of years, but have now become more and more frustrated with the problems I've been having recently. I am looking to purchase another program. Family Tree Maker seems to be a very popular choice of members here. But I wonder if someone could answer some questions (that are probably very obvious!)

Are the Family Tree Maker linked to Ancestory and the 'Who do you think you are' Family Tree Maker the same thing?
Do you need a subscription to Ancestory to access all the features?
Any recommendations/hints/advice?

Thanks
Gill

Thanks for that.  I thought Speed was quite a localised surname; obviously not.
I'll keep searching!

Thank You again,

Hi, Could you tell me where the SPEEDs were born. I have ancestors born in Lincolnshire and Rutland and am trying to put together siblings of a John Speed born c.1754 in Rutland.
