We never found out why his name was on the memorial at All Saints Windsor. He appears on others ....Leamigton Spa ,Clifton School .We did think that maybe he had a sister in Windsor. This research was done pre computer information and it took second place when my husband started researching his own family.
We are now wondering what todo with all his research. The family are interested but say they will digitise it.Not quite the same as holding a certificate of birth death and marriage

The name Walis is a link though.I think I might see if anyone is researching the earlier names in the letters and maybe contact them.
Thanks

The Lighter Side / 1840s papers found .....would love to find a family they belong to
« on: Sunday 11 December 16 10:57 GMT (UK)  »
Years ago my husband researched the one soldiers name on our local church memorial.Research took him everywhere  including the National ArchivesNow a few months after my husbands death I have found a large number of handwritten letters ,lists of BMD all around the 1840s.They were sent to him from the Isle of Wight in 1996 and I had never seen them before. They are obviously all connected with this soldiers well to do fami,y and it would be good to return them to the family.
Looking on Ancestry there many trees.....I cannot be sure if they are genuine or if the relationship is close.Any ideas how I should go about this.

About 20 years ago my husband became interested in the one and only name on the war memorial at AllSaints Church Dedworth Windsor Berks.Because this was the only name he decided to research this man and spent hours at the Archives, visiting areas where he had lived and following the war diaries on the Weatern Front.I shared this interest so know that he was researching this man in many directions.
Recently my husband died and I gave found an envelope with letters going back to 1840s Families include the Pelham family ,Hanley,Wallis to name a few. There are handwritten BMDs of some families .
I don't know how he got these papers but they came from the Isle of Wight in 1996.
Ive looked on Ancestry and see there area few trees there but I want to be sure that if I send these papers to anyone they are genuine close members of the family.
If you are interested I can send you a copy of various bits before sending the real thing to anyone.
Send me a personal email.Ringrose

The Lighter Side / Unbelievable death certificate
« on: Sunday 04 December 16 14:18 GMT (UK)  »
Years ago I sent for the death certificate of a gggrandfather Richard Light b Shropshire 1896.when it arrived I could not believe that he had died as a pensioner at Chelsea. The life that I had found out had revealed he was a bigamist twice over and spent time in the. 1840s on the Hulk ship York. His trial was found on the Old Bailey website. This was found at the archives in Kew.He was pardoned after a couple of years  and in the 51 and 61 census he is a labourer in London.Imagine my surprise when I saw his name amongst the Chelsea Pensioner records on Ancestry and FindMyPast. These records confirmed that he had served at Waterloo and that he had been B in Shropshire.I gave the right death cert but for years I couldn't see how he Coukd gave done army service.Another brick wall knocked down.

The Lighter Side / New Chelsea Pensioner records knock down a brick wall...but...
« on: Sunday 27 November 16 11:19 GMT (UK)  »
Years ago I sent for my gggrandfather Richard Lights death cert. When it arrived it showed he had died as an in pensioner at Chelsea. In the past a record of his trial for bigamy in 1842 sentenced him to transportation no he was on the HulkYork off Gosport.Looking at the Hulk records at Kew Ifoudhe had been pardoned ad o Findmy Past I founder ordained of this.In 51 and 61 he is a labourer in Westminster area and also on his daughters marriage certificate in 1869.
New records from Ancestry reveal he was admitted as a Royal Hospital Pensioner in October .1866 age 70 ...Private in the Rifle Brigade. Now I wonder when he did his army service.Am I right in thinking that a pardon was sometimes given if prisoners volunteered for the army.
I know it's the same man as the birthplace and date is right.
