i got the DLI from the use of the tittle

"The Durham Light Infantry in 1914-1918 - The Long, Long Trail"

When I accessed a website which had info on the Field Survey Units

I bow down to your superior knowledge in this area the site "http://www.1914-1918.net/re_survey.htm" which was probably a little misleading in its redirect.

the court martial document was only partial and my relative was not the subject but only there when it happened so isnt mentioned in any detail. but the 1st image as 23rd field Co at the top right

I got this from findmypast

My sister found from an electoral roll of voters away from home that he was

"WW1 in 1918 and 1919 he was away from home with the  Field Survey Co Re"

World War One / General question about fire destroyed records
« on: Friday 22 September 17 13:02 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I have been told several times about a lot of army records being destroyed by fire caused by bombing during the war.

I just read today there are 2 groups of records

Fire damaged ones which hare partial and fragile

Undamaged ones - these were described not as ones that we not touched by the bombing but ones that had been reconstructed from other documentation such as pensions and medals rolls etc.

This of course sounds common sense to me as basically the army is an employer and as such have a duty to ex service men and their families regarding all sorts of support like pensions etc

to do that they they would need to reconstruct the basic files

supposed the burnt files are WO363 and the Rebuilt Files are WO364.

Does any one have any more knowledge of this WO364 files.

its does seem a bit easy to say records are gone because of a fire, but the people the refer to quite often were not.

any thoughts comments

Is name was James william muir (may have just used james muir)

The closest i have came up with is a medal card

for a james muir 184080 which provides no detail
part of a court marital record where he was present which had at the top  RE 23 Field Co

My GF was born in county durham  dec 1891

Any suggestions

Surrey Lookup Requests / Re: Lookpup request at the national archives

Hello Steve

Thanks for looking, I am developing a web site "boldonwm.uk" with one of the topics being the east boldon camp which had several different uses.

So I am after as much info on it as I can, so the info you provided was good as it gave camp commander and approx number of POWs.

Did you say there was only 1 A3 page in the document? Any legible pictures would be useful if only to get extra information such as dates etc

Hi seaweed I already asked

But the reply is that some of the records are imcomplete or lost

Yes they can give lots of detail, unless you are one of the unlucky ones (that's me)

Thanks for your reply anyway

The actual request was for something different, a kind poster is looking up a record for me about a pow camp and I was simply stating that I want a gerneral synopsis of what is in it as depending on the content I might buy it.

I could buy it but it might having nothing in it at all.

I know you could also pay the site to have a quick look for you again if it is 20 pages fair enough but if only 5 words then works out expensive

Unfortunately the description gives no clue to its content

hi thanks for the reply

Yes i did, he was helpful but a bit vague. There were 2 graves for Muir's but Couldn't tell me if they were used or not.

As I am looking for a husband and wife the chances are it is the right ones, but he was also a bit vague on the description of where about's they are.

The grave yard a across the road is a simple rectangle without and significant features to get your orientation.

So a cemetery map would be useful, as if i did make the 40 mile journey the likelihood be to see a clear patch of grass anyway.

Was hoping that maybe someone who visits this site may have already done Similar research and have a layout.

the Wouldhorne site has nothing at all about it.

its a shame really as from the odd article i found in the papers around the early 1900's the family helped out at the church here and there.
