It does look very likely that Peter Couper is the same guy.  I also can't find his birth at ScotlandsPeople, but I can't find any births for any of the children listed in the 1851 scotland census.  Both sons William and Peter disappear from the Scottish census after 1851.

On William Cooper, I checked the records of the Sutherland Highlanders a while ago and a William Cooper (the only Cooper/Couper in the regiment) enlisted on 10th Feb 1852 aged 17 in Kirkcaldy, so he matches pretty well -- assuming what I've been told about the letter is right!

I found Peter Couper, senior's marriage and birth:

Banns were proclaimed in Abbotshall to Catherine Mitchell on 19th, 26th July & 2nd Aug 1829.  Oddly, they seem to have married in Kirkcaldy on the 19th of July:

"Peter Couper, Weaver of the Parish of Abbotshall, Son of Wm. Couper, Labourer, New Town of Abbotshall & Catherine Mitchell of this Parish daughter of George Mitchell, Weaver, Kirkaldy, Married."

Peter Couper was baptised in Kinglassie, 2nd Aug 1807: "Peter Cooper Son of W Cooper Labourer in Cluny."

I haven't seen the letter yet - my aunt heard about it recently and I think my mother cousin has it somewhere near Durham.  I'm hoping to get a copy fairly soon.

As for the 1861 census, I've only found the following possibility:
RG9/3808/117 Blaydon St. Cuthbert
Peter Cauper, Head, Mar, 26, Gardner, Scotland Fife Shire
Dorothy Cauper, Wife, Mar, 27,   Durham

Looking at the scanned image, I'm not even sure the surname is Cauper - it could be something like Cavifer.

Yes, Dorothy Heaviside is the daughter of John Heaviside & Mary Wanless.  She was christened 5 Jul 1830 at Durham St. Oswalds.   John Heaviside's ancestry can be traced back to James Heaviside, married in 1719 in Heighington.  Mary Wanless can be traced (with a bit of difficulty) back to her grandfather John Wanlas, who married in 1761 in Chester-le-Street.  Before that, there is a tangled mass of Wanless's to unravel

Montgomeryshire Lookup Requests / John WATKIN born ~1800, Newtown
« on: Saturday 14 April 07 08:29 BST (UK)  »
I've hit somewhat of a brickwall with John WATKIN and hope someone can do a parish record lookup for me.

I've traced him back through the census from Yorkshire to Staffordshire, and still all I know about his origins is his age and place of birth.

He is consistently 40, 50, 60 & 70 in the 1841/51/61/71 censuses, so I'm fairly sure he was born in 1800 or early 1801.  The 1851/61 censuses give his place of birth as New Town, Montgomeryshire so that is a likely birthplace, though given he was in Yorkshire for these censuses, it may be approximate.

His wife was born in Oswestry in Shropshire, so some time before he appears in Bilston, Staffordshire in 1841 he may also have lived in Shropshire.

Durham / Surname Interests
« on: Friday 13 April 07 11:28 BST (UK)  »
Here are my Durham interests:

EARL(E) / YEARL(E)  Chester-le-Street, 1750 --> 1850.  Brick wall before Edward EARL marriage to Mary WHITE (6 Jun 1750, Chester-le-Street)

WHITE, Mary.  Chester-le-Street before 1750.

BURLESON / BURLINSON Chester-le-Street and Ryton, before 1790

HAZON, Mary.  Anywhere, before 1766

FORSTER, Ann.  Chester-le-Street, born ~1793.

ROBSON, Philip.  Jesmond / Newcastle, born ~1836.

PATTISON / PATERSON.  Sunderland / Monkwearmouth, 1780 --> 1850.  Brick wall with John PATTERSON, waggonwright, aged 55 in 1841 census.

WINDER(S).  Sunderland, 1780 --> 1820.  Brick wall with Henry WINDER, who married Eleanor BOOTYMAN in Sunderland, 2 Dec 1788

COWPER.  Brick wall with James COWPER, born in Scotland around 1841.  I can trace him in all censuses back to 1871, then I lose track.  He married Dorothy Heaviside some time before 1862.

HEAVISIDE.  Heighington, 1720 --> 1800.  Brick wall with James HEAVISIDE who married Anne MARSHALL in Heighington, 12 Nov 1719.  Suspect he is probably to be found in the records for Auckland St. Andrew which are missing from the IGI for the period 1653 --> 1700.

MARSHALL, Anne.  See above.

REVLAND, Mary.  Brick wall before her marriage to Michael HEAVISIDE in Heighington, 5 Aug 1754.

EARNGY, Jane.  Brick wall before her marriage to Michael HEAVISIDE (jnr) in Heigington, 6 Mar 1788

WANLASS.  Chester-le-Street, before 1800.  Brick wall on John WANLAS, father of Robert WANLASS who was born 7 Sep 1777

BURNIP, Elizabeth.  Brick wall before and after her marriage to Robert WANLASS, Houghton-le-Spring, 12 Jul 1800.  She had a child, Mary, who was born 20 Oct 1800 in Philadelphia.  Robert died just before this on 27 Sep 1800.  Presumably Elizabeth re-married but I have been unable to find this.

Durham / A few brick walls
« on: Monday 19 March 07 10:25 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone seen the following:

Mary REVLAND (married Michael Heaviside on 5 Aug 1754 in Heighington)
Jane EARNGY (married Michael Heaviside - the son of Michael above - on 6 Mar 1788 in Newcastle)

Basically, I've not found any Co. Durham / Northumberland records for these surnames :-(

I've also brick-walled on James HEAVISIDE, who married Anne MARSHALL on 12 Nov 1719 in Heighington.  On this, I think the family probably originated in Auckland St. Andrew / St. Helen (there are a load of them from 1590 onwards) but there is a gap from 1653 to 1700 in the online (IGI) records.  If anyone has access to these, I'd be interested in any HEAVISIDES in there

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: Burial lookup - AMIES
« on: Thursday 01 February 07 12:14 GMT (UK)  »
Samuel and Martha Amies are in my tree (via a different son, not Thomas).  I'm brickwalled on Samuel - there are 2 possibilites for his birth and I can't currently work out which one he is.

Durham Lookup Requests / Re: Houghton-le-spring marriage lookup
« on: Tuesday 15 August 06 09:34 BST (UK)  »
Yes, I know that.  But this is during the period (1797 - 1812) when Shute Barrington was bishop of Durham.  He was an amateur genealogist and asked for registers to be kept in great detail.

You get entries like, for example:

1805 - Margaret Chapman, born November 18, 1804, baptised March 31st 1805. Second daughter of John Chapman of Headlam, schoolmaster, (son of George Chapman) native of Lartington in the parish of Romaldkirk, Yorkshire, by his wife Mary Robinson (daughter of William Robinson) native of West Rounton, Yorkshire.

Durham Lookup Requests / Houghton-le-spring marriage lookup
« on: Sunday 13 August 06 09:33 BST (UK)  »
I've got a marriage from the George Bell index but really need the full entry (which hopefully has more details).  The entry in question is:

Robert WANLASS = Elizabeth BURNIP, 27 Sep 1800, Houghton-le-Spring

If anyone happens to be looking at other marriages from this parish, a lookup  would be appreciated!

Shropshire / Re: Interests: Amies (Diddlebury / Munslow pre 1800)
« on: Sunday 08 January 06 10:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hmm . . . I'm descended from Francis Amies, born 1774 in Munslow, parents
Samuel Amies and Martha Corbett (married 1757 in Munslow).  However, before his marriage in 1757, I can't pin down definitively which "Samuel Amies" he is . . .

If he was the son of Bonham & Hannah, he'd be married at 22, have last child at 34, and die aged 71.

If he was the son of William & Sarah, he'd be married at 34, have last child at 45, and die aged 83.

Both of these are seem reasonable to me, so I'd be interested to know a) if we're talking about the same Samuel Amies and b) whether you have any data that helps me pin down my "Samuel Amies" better . . .
