Dublin / Re: Mineral water companys,1897 Dublin

My great grandfather worked as a Mineral Water engineer according to his 1901 census - he worked in Cantrell & Cochrane (C&C), so you might add this to your list of companies.

Yep - this is my Emma alright. She is one of four and I've looked into all three of her siblings whereabouts as well as the Elliotts (her mother's family) to no avail. Every so often I run a search on Ancestry to see if something new pops up.

Thanks a million :)

Aw thank you all so much  :D

I  have to agree in hindsight that Emma more than likely is the boat and that Feary was her captain :(

re her background - Emma was born in Middlesex, the eldest of four and her mother died when she was 10 (1870). Emma is with the family in 1871 census and that's the last I can find of her. Funnily enough, her younger brother became a fisherman and died a young man in none other than Hull. His wife died shortly after him, both in their 30s and their children then went to live in the Home for Fishermens Children in Hull.

Thanks again to all for your input, its much appreciated,
Denise

Family History Beginners Board / Don't know where to ask this..... sorry
« on: Monday 20 January 14 16:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
For some time I've being trying to find anything to do with GG Aunt Emma Ellen Feary. I have her in 1871 census at the age of 11 (listed as Emma Fearey) but nothing since. Just now I've found something that may be of relevance but I'm not quite sure what it means.

In the Hull Packet and East Riding Times from 1873 there is a column called Shipping Intelligence which, I presume, lists ships into and out of Hull. The transcript says this.....

"JANUARY 1: - Arrived: Emma, Feary, Caen; Hawk ss, Tatter, Amsterdam; Helen McGregor ps, Barron,Hamburg; ..... Sailed:  "     and from there it lists a number of ships which sailed that day.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks
Denise

Dublin / Anyone looking for McEvoys - Meath Street, Dublin - mid 1800s?
« on: Tuesday 22 October 13 13:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

It took quite a lot of looking but I eventually managed to find some concrete details for my 2x Gr grandparents William & Elizabeth McEvoy.

I initially got their names from marriage data for my great grandfather, and from census data I knew that they had at least three children: John, James & Elizabeth but I'm really curious to know now if they had any more children. This is a synopsis of the information I have at the  moment:

William McEvoy (b. 1823) married Elizabeth ? (b. 1821) - dont have date of marriage

William    d. 15 Nov 1868 at 79 Meath Street and is buried in Glasnevin. He was a Mercantile Clerk.
Elizabeth d. 19 Dec 1887 at 5 James' Street North, North Wall, buried in same grave (Infant grandchildren and others unknown also in grave)

Children (dobs differ from 1901, 1911 and death):

John       b, 1853-1857 Dublin City
James     b. 1859-1863 Dublin City
Elizabeth b. 1865-1868 Dublin City

As you can see there is plenty of time for other siblings to have been born so I'm wondering if anyone else out there is looking into this family too - I have loads of info to share :)

Best wishes
Denise

Northumberland / Snowdon Bookbinders, Newcastle
« on: Monday 10 September 12 01:07 BST (UK)  »
I dont suppose anyone reading this might have details of a particular Newcastle family called Snowdon who were bookmakers in the 1800s.

I would love to talk to you if you have them in your family tree as my great great grandfather was a son of William, who had a bookbinder from Todds Court, Newcastle

Sorry Lisa you are quite right - that was a mistake on my part.

His DOB was 20 Dec 1879. Actually, his WW1 draft shows his next of kin as being his sister Mrs Mary McEvoy, this was then crossed out and he gave the name of a friend instead.

Mary McEvoy was my mothers granny - this was how I realised that this was our Albert William in the first place.

Thanks

US Lookup Requests / 1910 & 1920 Census Lookup please
« on: Thursday 14 July 11 10:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Could some kind soul see if they can unearth my great grand uncle Albert please :)

I have found him in the NY 1905 Census and I have his WW1 Draft Registration Card but cannot find him in either 1910 or 1920 censuses.

His details are:

Albert William Snowdon      b. 20 Aug 1879 in Dublin Ireland

1901 Census - living at home with parents in Dublin
July 1902 he enlisted in and almost immediately deserted the British Army in Dublin
1905 Census - 18 Chatham Sq, Manhattan  (Salvation Army house)
Sep 1918 - WW1 Draft - 15 Bowery, Manhattan NY (flophouse, I think) - worked in JY Watkins on Catherine St.

Only yesterday I found a site which shows NYC deaths and there is a death for an Albert Snowdon on 3 Nov 1922, it is the right age for him but has no other details.

I have searched on Ancestry for him in 1910 and 1920 censuses to no avail so hopefully someone there could take a look and see if they can find anything that i might be missing.

Thanks in advance
Denise
