Lancashire / Re: P.U. Lathom?
« on: Sunday 26 October 08 14:09 GMT (UK)  »
HI

A new workhouse was built in Wigan Road, Ormskirk in 1851. ( It is now Ormskirk Hospital).   Prior to that the workhouse.

The old workhouse was in Moor Street at the junction of St. Helens Road.

So neither of these are Lathom (as in current times).

Lathom may well have had its own workhouse.  I don't know how big or small it was in the 1840's

Hi

I have tried to look up this information but as with the other people who replied I can't find very much!

According to FreeBMD, Harriet was Harriet Eliza Rogers.

Most Corsers seem to originate from Staffordshire, so it might be worth pursuing this line.

I did find a Henry John Corser born 1854 Shrewsbury and in the 1861 census his father is listed as Edward Corser, Solicitor, born Stourbridge.  This could be the same family.

I think your best bet is to send for the John/Harriet marriage certificate which will give you their ages, current address and witness names.  This should help you go further back.

Lancashire / TAYLOR, WILLIAM born c. 1800 Liverpool
« on: Friday 24 October 08 15:34 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the birth of William Taylor around 1800 in Liverpool.

William appears on the 1841 census living in Dickenson Street with wife Jane and children.  His occupation was a labourer although in later years he appeared as a furniture broker and bill poster.

I cannot find either William's birth or his marriage.  Jane's surname is unknown as the children were born before 1837 and I cannot find official records.  The IGI has a marriage to Jane Woods in Warrington which is the only record I can find.  I am unsure if this is the one because of the Warrington connection.

William's son, also William Taylor, married Rosina Martha Krebs in Liverpool in 1859.

Is anyone else researching this family?   Could anyone offer any advice on where I could go next?  This is a huge brick wall because there are thousands of Taylors!!

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Cornwall / Re: VENNEN in Cornwall/Devon

Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the trouble to look up information for me.  I am overwhelmed!

With all the information provided, particularly the link to the Dorothy Toy/Samuel Meagre marriage it all seems to have fallen into place, and I am sure that this is my family.

Thank you all again.

Cornwall / VENNEN in Cornwall/Devon
« on: Tuesday 21 October 08 10:25 BST (UK)  »
Is there anyone researching the name Vennen?
I have a William Thomas Vennen, born in Cornwall, probably around 1820.  His wife was Jane (maiden name not known).  They had a daughter Mary Jane, born 1844 who married Benjamin Griffiths in Plymouth Devon.  Benjamin was in the navy.

I have a long tree of descendants but I can't find any records in Cornwall relating to earlier Vennens.

Any help would be appreciated

Does anyone else have any Vennens in their family?  I am finding it difficult to find any information.  My Vennens originated in Cornwall.  Jane Vennen married Benjamin Griffiths (seafarer) in Plymouth, and settled there.

Any help appreciated

Hi

These records are on Ancestry.com

Also if you Google  "Midlothian Apprentice Records" you should get a link to a book digitised by Google which gives lots of information about apprentices in the area

Having looked again at my information I don't think there is any connection.

I found the details of the two deaths on

www.familyhistoryonline.net

You can look up the basics free but need to subscribe for more details. The cost is minimal.

Good luck with your search

I saw your posting about Gilchrists in Oldham.

My Gilchrists are from Edinburgh, but one of them, Charlotte Maria Gilchrist, married James Wilson, a grocer from Oldham.  From the research I have carried out it seems they lived in Oldham around 1820, and had 2 children there, who both died and are buried at St. Marys.

One was Charlotte Maria Gilchrist Wilson and the other was her brother William Edward Gilchrist Wilson.  The records I obtained from the Family History Societies website showed the surname as Wilson Gilchrist instead of the correct Gilchrist Wilson.

Are these the same records you have?
