This might sound a small thing but I would really like to know how and when the Richardsons made the trip from NZ to NSW.

I have checked all the mariners sites that I am aware of with no result. The time frame I am working within is as follows:

William definitely in NZ on 22 Marrch 1865 as he marries Ann Jane McCutcheon in St Peters Church Onehunga.

Definitely in NSW by 28 Oct 1868 at Lambton NSW as he appears in the Insolvency Index of the State Records of NSW.

My interest in this family is that William is my wife's gg grandfather. We actually have two photos of Mary Ann Richardson after her marriage with her family. She married a Thomas Fairless Dent also ex Durham from Hetton-Le-Hole.

Thanks

Alan

In the 1851 census, there is a John aged 5 down as a grandson but surname Peacock. Maybe our "John Richardson" at 36 Adelaide St Shildon.

For organising myself timewise, I am in NSW Australia. Can my helpers please broadly locate themselves so I can send messages at appropriate times.

Thanks

Alan

OK !!
Now we are getting to the nitty gritty !

1861 census : Matthew Richardson b. Shildon 1848 Grandson &
1861 census : John H Richardson b. Shildon 1846 Durham

He left both boys to go to NZ with Jane Vest (Best) taking also Mary Ann.

I have had contact with one person in Newcastle Australia who is the grand daughter of one of his children.

We can trace Annie McCutcheon (his 3rd wife ) into the 1920's, living with her children. Then she disappears. Probably went back to NZ.

There are newspaper reports of his second wife's (Jane Vest) death in NZ. She apparently drank herself to death. References are available !

Luckily, all this is on my wife's side of the family !!! My family is perfect!! At the moment !!

Thanks!

Alan

Also !

James Cahill remarries in 1902 which is 7 years after the supposed disappearance of Sarah Ellen. I am led to believe that after 7 years of a person being missing, then that person could be declared dead and spouses free to marry again.

Thanks for your help so far!

In the 1851 census William is at the Joiners Arms Inn in Willington and says he is unmarried.

Jane Richardson (Peacock) is living with her parents Michael & Jane at 36 Adelaide St Shildon with what appears to be a child, Matthew.

The Jane Vest who later becomes Jane Richardson appears to be at 41 Dock St Huddersfield with her parents.

The child Mary Ann Richardson was born on 8 August 1853 in Grape St Hunslet. Mother was Jane Richardson, formerly Best !!(Probably Vest.)

I am guessing but I think William could not marry the second Jane until 1858 because the first Jane was still alive.

This Jane Richardson eventually dies in NZ in 1864. William marries for a third time to Annie McCutcheon and they travel to Australia.

On William's death cert. there are 13 children listed though the informant does not include the child to Jane Peacock.

I think this William Blackett Richardson was a bit of a character. I have found references to him in locally produced written material in the Newcastle NSW region.

Any mor help gratefully received.

Hi!
Her disappearance around 1895 is based upon family lore. Supposedly she sent her daughter Ellen to the corner shop for milk, Ellen being about 7 at the time. When the child returns, mother has gone never to be seen again.

Now this story might mask a multitude of reasons for the disappearance but at the moment I am holding onto it as I don't have a better option.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello !
William Blackett Richardson married Jane Peacock Feb 22 1845 in Shildon Durham.  He eventually leaves her and fathers a child , Mary Ann Richardson, to a Jane Vest (Best). The original Jane Peacock dies and William marries his second Jane on August 9 1858 in Leeds.
The family proceeds to NZ on the "Harwood" and then approximately 1864 arrive in the Newcastle area of NSW.

If anyone could flesh out this story, I would be most appreciative.

Thanks

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Sarah Ellen Cahill (born Williams)
« on: Friday 01 May 09 10:39 BST (UK)  »
I apologise to people who have read this message on other sites, but I am determined to keep looking for her.

Sarah Ellen Williams b. 3 Oct 1870 to William Williams & Ellen (formerly Fox.)

She marries James Thomas Cahill on 14 June 1887 in St Anthony's Chapel Scotland Road Liverpool.

From this marriage, at least one child is born, Ellen Cahill on 12 November 1888.

Sometime around 1895 Sarah Ellen Cahill disappears from the home and is never seen again.

The whole Cahill family is missing from the 1891 Census. James is a seaman and that may be the reason.

James and his daughter, now recorded as Helen, reappear in the 1901 census. In the house is also a Margaret recorded as wife, but I have documentary evidence that the marriage did not eventuate until 1902. Possibly because this was 7 years after Sarah Ellen's disappearance and now would be legal.

My aim is to find the whereabouts of Sarah Ellen Cahill. With the help of many individuals & organisations, I have eliminated the obvious.  Marriages & births & deaths on Free BMD have been pursued. Lancs BMD site has been investigated.

She may have died, she may have chosen to disappear, she may have remarried under another name, she may have emigrated. I have been down most tracks.

Sarah Ellen was my great grandmother and I would like to know where she finally rests.

Any suggestions will be most greatfully received and a reply will be forthcoming.

Thanks

Alan
