Armed Forces / Re: British regiment in Canada 1810-1821

Just one more thing about this military record. I can't quite make out what it says in the Observations column after "Died 25 Oct 1812". It's difficult to read with the bleed-through but I think it starts "by order of .....". Anyone any ideas?   (N.B. Scroll right to see full image)

Military Date: 7 Apr 1809". This is not shown on the original record so where might Ancestry have got that date from and what does it mean?

These images are scans of open ledgers with the record continuing on the opposite page. Have you looked at the next image?

ShaunJ you are a star! I had simply viewed the image presented to me but having taken your advice I see there is indeed a second page with a lot more information. Firstly is states that it is a record for the 1st battalion of the 82nd Foot, not the 2nd as was suggested earlier. Against my "ancestor" under Attestation is that mysterious date 7 Apr 1809, which is presumably the date he signed up. That second page also shows that he died on 25 Oct 1812 (Napoleonic Wars?) which means that he is not after all my 3G Grandfather as my 2G Grandfather was born in 1819! However, this hasn't been a wasted exercise as he might still be a relative and I have learned quite a bit about military history and military records, so many thanks to everyone who has responded.

Many thanks John915 and Regorian for sharing your knowledge of British military history. It would appear from what you say that my ancestor spent just one year in Canada with the 82nd foot in the period 1810-1821. You say that the 2nd battalion went to Canada in 1814 so what do you think the Ancestry reference to "Military Date: 7 Apr 1809" means?

I have found the military record of my 3G Grandfather in a document headed as follows :-

Canada, British Regimental Registers of Service
82nd Foot Soldiers    1810-1821

This raises some questions, namely :-

1. What were the British doing in Canada at that time?
2. Does it mean my ancestor served all 11 years from 1810 to 1821?
3. The Ancestry transcription of this states "Military Date: 7 Apr 1809". This is not shown on the original record so where might Ancestry have got that date from and what does it mean?

I'd be very grateful if anyone can answer any or all of these questions for me. Thank you.

The Common Room / Re: Searching the new GRO indexes - share your tips!
« on: Saturday 19 November 16 13:20 GMT (UK)  »
Like many others I have found the new GRO indexes invaluable, though so far I have not ordered any PDF certificates. If I got a PDF certificate and printed it would it look any different from a GRO paper certificate? If yes, then in what way would it be different?

Guy summarized it here

No the uncertified PDF image is the same as the centre part of a paper ceritificate (i.e. the part that used to be surrounded by a red line forming a box).

The top section (above the box) on the paper image is not reproduced and the bottom section is not reproduced.
The reason these two sections are not copied to the uncertified PDF images is that they both confirm it being a certified copy which of course the PDF is not.

Thank you JenB for your reply pointing me to Guy Etchell's earlier answer which I obviously missed. It would appear that the new PDF certificates would satisfy most family historians, so let's hope that the GRO make it a permanent facility after the trial has finished.

If no, then why would anyone pay extra for a paper certificate?
(Apologies if this question has been answered elsewhere!)

Technical Help / Re: recipients with BTinternet email addresses
« on: Friday 18 November 16 16:34 GMT (UK)  »

I was migrated away from Yahoo fairly early in the process and don't receive any SPAM.   The only downside is that you do need to logon via webmail every now and then to check the SPAM folder as BT filters some email that should be delivered.

I too was one of the lucky ones who migrated from BT/Yahoo a long time ago and very liitle spam now gets through. Like HarryW I do check my BT spam folder regularly because it frequently places good emails in there. What BT email doesn't do is learn from what I've told it. I can tell it one day that an item is "Not spam" and yet it continues to class similar emails from that same source as spam!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Where is this? #16 Bridge being built
« on: Sunday 11 September 16 16:13 BST (UK)  »
It could be  a swing bridge  near Warrington  on the A49  or A50   over the Manchester Ship Canal

It is definitely not one of the three Warrington swing bridges (A49, A50, A56) nor the Barton swing bridge (B5211) as all of these have a curved structure. I doubt that it's taken anywhere along the Manchester Ship Canal as the waterway in the photo is far too wide.

It looks as though you have gone into "list" mode. Simply click on View in the menu bar and select the size of icons you require (extra large, large, medium or small). Do you now see what you used to see?
