New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Christchurch NZ Christening Record

Sue

I have never seen a death cert from anywhere that gives baptismal places as well as birth places. Especially as the info is often given by surviving children who were not there. I'm not doubting you but why are you so certain that she was born in one place and christened in another, given that she was here for so short a time?

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: KERR to Whangarei

Hi again

The simple answer as to why you can't find him in Whangarei is that he was not buried there. He was taken elsewhere for burial. I think that once you find where Lilly is buried then there too you will find Walter. Somewhere in the bottom half of the North Island. Will see what I can find in the local library on Saturday.

As for the pronunciation of Whangarei, I would not even attempt  to express it phonetically to anyone unfamiliar with Maori vowels etc. Be thankful it wasn't Rerewhakaaitu I'd say.

Hi Chinakay

What you can infer is that she probably lived in the lower regions of the North Island.eg Hawkes Bay, Taranaki or Wellington. If you obtain a copy of the probate it will normally tell you where she lived, where she died and the names of those children who survived her. However her death entry ought to tell you the same thing (other than the children's names) and if Archway have it for 1919 that is probably the year she died although remember that probates are necessarily after the event. In any event it is enough for the Registrar BDM to find her.

Hi Chinakay

It is not as bad as it seems. Archives has a remote reference service which can be found at the following URL. they will charge you though.

Hi Ferg

Greetings to my old home town. Try this URL for the Shalimar into Auckland in 1862. There are two Fergusons who match your names.

Was at the library today but could not find your lady under Neal, Neale, Neil or Neill. Sorry but she wasn't there.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Andrew Cumming married Jane Stark Miller

To add to your most recent posting, I went to the library this afternoon and whilst there looked up the monumental inscription recorded on Andrew and Jane’s headstone. It was as follows

Sacred to the memory of ANDREW CUMMING of Bloomfield, native of Cummock, Ayrshire Scotland born October 1838 died 16 July 1918. Also his beloved wife JANE, died 22 October 1926 aged 85 and their daughters MINA died 17 November 1943 aged 75, MARION died 9 February 1947 aged 73, JANE died 2 December 1950 aged 79.

Clearly the stone was erected after 1950.

There was also a record of a William Cumming who died 23 May 1962 aged 88. He might also be related. Perhaps a son.

The history of the Hokitika Borough Council records that in its first election on 3 October 1866 an Andrew Cumming, a storekeeper was elected. It includes a photo montage of those elected including a heavily bearded Andrew. Difficult to guess his age but he certainly looks around 30. I wonder what his obituary might have said? This Andrew and yours might be one and the same person.

Stark as the maiden name of her mother fits easily within the normal British naming patterns and if Andrew had any say his parents names will be amongst their children as well.

Finally parents were often the official witnesses at weddings so it is possible that David Miller is her father.

Time for their death entries I would say.

Intriguing though. If she was a widow then who is David Miller? Is she using her maiden name and is David her brother? Is the widow designation an error? Certainly can't find any other marriage for her.

Hi Heather,

Unfortunately I live 200 miles north of Dunedin but the Northern Cemetery is still very much in existance. It has a website as follows:

http://www.southernheritage.org.nz/northerncemetery/home.html

The site contains a link to the Dunedin Branch of the NZSG. Give them a try. Bound to be someone who will help you.

Cheers
