Perhaps death certificate indexed under another spelling, like Wrenham instead of Wernham, etc.?

If you have an old picture of the house, bring it with you. Most people are delighted to see what their house looked like years ago and it often starts a conversation about what changes there have been to the house over the years.

Dublin / Re: 1900 Flu epidemic, Dublin

There was an influeza epidemic in 1900 in Britain (including  Ireland). Approx. 50 people died each day in London and other major cities were hit.
It was certainly in Dublin in 1900. One of the influenza victims included Dr. Thomas Wrigley Grimshaw, Registrar-General of Ireland since 1879, who died 23 Jan.1900.
Try putting in something like "influenza 1900 Dublin" and you'll get lots of information.

Antrim Completed Look up Requests / Re: Minnie, Mattie and Peggy
« on: Monday 16 October 06 08:42 BST (UK)  »
Minnie usually short for Mary or Mary Ann(e)
Peggy for Margaret
Mattie can be for Martha or Matilda (which also uses Tillie/Tilly).

Also in Ireland (at least in Ulster):
Nancy is used for Ann(e) or Agnes

Armed Forces / Re: Advice -no birth certificate in Dublin
« on: Monday 16 October 06 08:34 BST (UK)  »
Two possiblities-
1) not registered (birth registrations started 1864 but wasn't compulsary until (I think from memory) 1870
2) birth is registered but either surname mis-read or mis-spelt on actual certificate.
If surname was unusual (for Dublin/Ireland) could easily have been put down wrong.
Probably the only way to know for sure would be to go through actual registers (available to order through local LDS library).

Ayrshire / Re: John Hogg and Helen/Ellen Cairns
« on: Monday 16 October 06 08:15 BST (UK)  »
At the moment I can only find one William Hogg that is the right age to be John's father. Unfortunately I don't have the name of his wife.

William Hogg, father of Rankin Hogg born c1810 farmer living at Gortin Mayoughill townland in Aghadowey 1850. Rankin Hogg is still living at Gortin Mayoughill in 1859 (Griffith's Valuation) so it looks like a) his father William was already dead or b) father was living somewhere else. In 1831 Census there is no Hogg (head of household) at Gortin Mayoughill.

Not enough information to find family of your John Hogg in Scotland but will keep an eye out for you here.

P.S. Ellen more often found in Ulster while name is written as Helen in Scotland. Also, Agnes and Nancy are interchangable here but Nancy is also used for Ann/Anne.

Glamorganshire Completed Lookups / Re: DRISCOLL 1861/1871 Cardiff
« on: Sunday 15 October 06 00:08 BST (UK)  »
Thanks again Cas.
James & Mary probably married a year or two before 1851 census. Johannah more likely to be 12 months old.
Have been trying to find family in 1880 U.S. or 1881 UK census (familyserach.org) but no luck yet, so it's wonderful to have them located earlier in Cardiff.

Cas- I think you have found them!

I thought there were more than 3 children.
I know Joanna went to U.S., married & had family. Perhaps at the time of 1871 census she was working and living away from home.
Ellen also went to U.S., married & had children, as did Daniel. All three of them lived near each other but I've been unable to find parents or other siblings.

Many, many thanks for looking them up so quickly.

- While I was typing this I just got your last message. 1851 Census- yes please.

Glamorganshire Completed Lookups / DRISCOLL 1861/1871 Cardiff- COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 14 October 06 23:01 BST (UK)  »
James Driscoll & wife Mary Keefe born in Ireland. Moved to Cardiff before 1852. Three known children:
1. Joanna/Annie O'Driscoll born circa Dec.1852 Cardiff.
2. Ellen Driscoll, born 20 Sept.1864 Cardiff.
3. Daniel J. Driscoll born circa 1865 Cardiff.

Suspect that James & Mary (Keefe) Driscoll had other children.

All three children (Joanna, Ellen, Daniel) went to U.S. In 1900 U.S. Census Daniel says he came to U.S. 1850 (before he was born!) & in 1910 says to U.S. 1887. Joanna was in U.S. by 1879 and Ellen by 1887 (her records say 1873).

I know there were lots of Irish Driscolls in Cardiff but can anyone help find this family there?
