Shropshire / Coroner's Report
« on: Monday 20 June 11 22:54 BST (UK)  »
My Great Grandmother died in 1947, and her death certificate tells me that an inquest was held to establish the circumstances of her death. This was carried out by the Coroner for the Borough of Shrewsbury.
Can anyone please tell me how and where I can see a copy of this report.
Hopefully, it will give me her date of birth.

Caernarvonshire / Re: Elizabeth Jones of Caernarvon
« on: Tuesday 12 April 11 22:18 BST (UK)  »
Thank you, The Mc, for the link. Using it, I thought that I reduced the possible Elizabeth Joneses born in Caernarvon at the right time and with the right father to two; but then along came EmyrBorth.
I think, Emyr, that you have found the brother of my Elizabeth: Griffith Evan Jones. The aged aunt who told me many years ago of Eira and Enid also made mention of a school teacher and a connection with Llanberis or Nant Peris - she couldn't remember which. I couldn't find the birth of Griffith; it seems to be as popular a name as Elizabeth, but I found his marriage. Oddly, he married an Elizabeth Jones. I will now obtain his marriage certificate, which will give me his father's name and occupation.
I am, however, still slightly puzzled why Elizabeth always gave her birthplace as Caernarvon, and Griffith was born in Bangor. I suppose that the family could have moved.
Thank you, both The Mc and EmyrBorth, for your interest and help.

Caernarvonshire / Elizabeth Jones of Caernarvon

I would greatly appreciate any help or advice in finding the birth of my G, grandmother, Elizabeth Jones.
Census returns reveal that she was born in Caernarvon in 1859/60.
Her marriage certificate tells us that her Father was William Jones, a Sailor.
She married one Joseph Phillips, an Earthenware Dealer from Shrewsbury, where the pair settled and raised a family. They were married in Salford on 31/07/1880, and she gives her age as 22, which doesn't agree with later census ages so it seems that she inflated her age. The witnesses give no clues.
She died in Shrewsbury in September 1947 aged 87. I have been told that she had a brother, who had two daughters named Enid and Eira.
My problem is that there were many girls of this name born in Caernarvon in those years, and buying birth certificates for them all in the hope of finding a Sailor father would be rather expensive. can anyone come up with a way of narrowing the field?

Many thanks John for your interest in this problem, which has been puzzling me for years.
I don't think that he returned to Britain, but I will check as you suggest.
Somehow, his wife convinced the church authorities that she was a widow in order to remarry in church, and family tradition has it that he died out there.
Maybe he went to Canada.
Thanks again, Al

Hi,
I am hoping that someone can help me to trace what happened to my G'Grandfather, Alfred Speake who, according to the Ellis Island website, arrived in New York on the Cunarder 'Etruria' on Nov 4th 1892 from Liverpool. He was aged 31 and his occupation was given as pavior, although he had earlier been a coal miner, and his destination was said to be Pittsburg.
He left behind a wife and young son, in Ironbridge, Shropshire and his wife remarried in 1908.
Family tradition has it that he died out there, but he could, of course, have 'disappeared' and started a new life.

Thanks very much for that help Shane. I will now send for a birth certificate, and see where that takes me.

Shropshire / Re: Edge and Sons, Shifnal

I can add a little to earlier posts, as I worked for the company from 1970 until it closed in 1972.
Edge and Sons were manufacturers of wire rope and chain, mainly for the mining industry but, after they were taken over by British Ropes in 1942, they concentrated solely on chain and mine cage suspension gear.
In 1970, another British Ropes subsidiary company, Speedseal Products, was moved onto the site, and I joined the company to run the combined drawing office.
In 1972, British Ropes sold Edges to the Parson's Chain company of Stourport, who closed the factory, made the 139 employees redundant and took away any useful plant and equipment.
The factory still stands alongside the Shrewsbury/Wolverhapton raiway line and looks much as it did when Edges closed.
I'm afraid that I can't recall the names of any of the workforce.

I would appreciate any help to establish the ancestry of my Grandmother, Annie Maria Balfe. I understand that she was born in or near Kells.
From her marriage certificate, I know that she was born in 1880 or1881 and was a domestic servant in Liverpool.
Her father was Edward Balfe, a shop porter, who was deceased by the time of her marriage in 1906. She is known to have at least one brother: John.
