It was a huge fluffy chow who sat by the open fire in the classroom. We are going back to the  1940s where iced up milk bottles used to melt by mid morning break .If it hadn't we thought we were eating ice cream.

The Common Room / Criminals use sites like Ancestry to find Mothers maiden name
« on: Thursday 21 July 16 18:32 BST (UK)  »
Often one of the security questions by banks is to ask for Mothers maiden name.Friends have been caught out when a card was used and by finding a maiden name were able to access account in one of thevHigh St. Banks.Idont know the full story but it now seems so easy to get this info which I'm sure we have all used in the past.

Australia / Re: Help Needed To Find Date Of Birth of my WW1 Digger Relative.
« on: Thursday 21 July 16 10:06 BST (UK)  »
The Australian war records are on line .I found two of my great uncles who had gone from Uk and joined the Australian Army.I got the full war record for both of them including a short form about the death of one of them at Passchendale, mentioning his brother was with him. This brother returned to Western Australia, married and died in his 80s.
It was a few years ago when I found the records  probably by Googling and searching.

The Common Room / Re: Read a selection of magazines with your library card

I've been using This service for some time .Called Magszter and there is one family history magazine there.I also pay £9 ish a month to Readly. This has masses and masses of magazines which you often see in Smiths.I regularly read Who DonYou Think You Are on this site.Well worth a look at and you can have a free run before you start.
Our library also has Overdrive which enables you to download books for three weeks. This often means I can read books very soon after publication.

The Lighter Side / Not wearing gloves when looking at old artefacts
« on: Saturday 18 June 16 12:41 BST (UK)  »
We have noticed in recent programmes that people don't always wear gloves when looking at very old treasures. It was noticeable last night during David Dimblebys excellent programme. No gloves when turning pages of a beautiful very old book but gloves when he looked at Mary Rose artefacts.Surely grease from fingers could harm quite a few items.
