Renfrewshire / Re: A BAKER in a CAIRNS Lair - Abbey Cemetery, Elderslie
« on: Friday 31 July 09 16:14 BST (UK)  »
Kathy,

You are a jewel!

I had to inquire about the Lair coordinates and in the response, the ages of those interred there was given.

All, but one, are children ranging from 14 years old down to 6 months.  The sole adult, Elizabeth Cairns, age 60, is a new lead for me to pursue.  She is now the leading candidate to be my great-great- grandmother.

What you have given me here confirms, beyond a doubt, that the John Cairns family residing at 7 Houston Square in Johnstone in the 1901 census IS the family of my great-grandfather's brother.

Thanks so much.

Renfrewshire / A BAKER in a CAIRNS Lair - Abbey Cemetery, Elderslie
« on: Friday 31 July 09 03:37 BST (UK)  »
Anyone have any idea why a Henry L. Baker was buried in an Abbey Cemetary lair that was, otherwise, full of Cairns family names.

The lair was purchased September 30, 1893 by John Cairns of Elderslie.

Mr. Baker was buried in July of 1913.

There was one more Cairns burial in the lair following Mr. Baker, but can't make out the year.

I have not run across any Cairns - Baker family connections, so I am very curious to find out if anyone might have some info.

Renfrewshire / Re: Infant's Grave - Johnstone
« on: Tuesday 28 July 09 15:43 BST (UK)  »
Thank you Kathy and Seek.

Seek:  Joseph worked in the paper industry.  I think, at one time anyway, that he was employed by a firm called Smith & MacLaren.

By the way to all:  I have found that Joseph had a brother, John, who appears to have lived at 7 Houston Square in Johnstone.  John was a bootmaker.  His wife was Mary and children included:  A. Eliza, Mary, Charlie, robert, Sam, Maria, Sarah, Joseph, Rachel and John.

I am amazed that with as many children as both families had that no one else seems to be researching them.

Thank you for the link, Nel.

I had assumed that Clippens was the name of a hospital since I can't seem to find a town of that name.  Similarly, I have not been able to locate the "Spinners Row" on which the family lived at that time in Johnstone.

I have been having other internet related problems, so I suspect the issue is at my end and not with SP.  I will try to download the death entry image a couple more times after I troubleshoot.

Renfrewshire / Infant's Grave - Johnstone - COMPLETED - Thank you!

Thanks to all who have helped.  I have found that she is buried in Abbey Cemetery, Elderslie.  Further, easing my mind greatly, the lair holds other Cairns family members who I do not yet know, but will share names/dates on another post to help find out more.

Again, a very warm thanks to everyone.

Original Post:

I hope no one thinks I'm odd, but this is a sincere request.

My ggrandparents (and all their children), Joseph Cairns and Rachel Donaldson, emigrated to the US in 1910/1911 from the Johnstone/Kilbarchan/Linwood area.  In a newpaper article concerning their 50th wedding anniversary, it was noted they had a daughter, Rachel, who died at about age two while they were living in Johnstone.

Lately, I have been bothered very much by the thought this child's grave has not been visited or thought of in almost 100 years.

According to SP, there was a Rachel Cairns who died in 1900, age 1, in the Johnstone/Elderslie district - GROS Data:  573/02 0170.  Every time I try to view the document image, though, my computer times out.

Could someone point me toward some resources to help me determine if there is a marked grave and its location?

Thanks, in advance.

Down / CAIRNS, DONALDSON, McBRIDE, SMYTH-Knocknagore
« on: Friday 24 July 09 16:10 BST (UK)  »
I have, just this week (August 9th), found out that Joseph's mother was Elizabeth Ann Quin.  Loughans seems to be, also, a townland connected to these families.

Original Post appears below:

First time posting.  Hope someone can provide further leads.

GGParents were Joseph Cairns and Rachel Donaldson.

Joseph was born Feb 2, 1862 in Gilford.  According to marriage certificate, his father's name was John (a farmer).  Although Gilford seems to be in Co. Down, Joseph claimed Co. Armagh as his home county.  Joseph had at least one sibling - John -, and they both moved to Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland sometime in the 1880s.

Rachel was born 1861, in the area of Tullylish/Seapatrick/Knocknagore.  Her parents were Christy Donaldson and Eliza McBride.  Eliza's parents were John and (I believe) Margaret McBride.  Rachel's siblings included Minnie, Sarah, John, Margaret, Christopher, William and James.  Eliza Donaldson was living in Knocknagore in the 1911 census.

Joseph and Rachel were married March 26, 1863 in Tullylish.  Witnesses were Joseph Smyth and Mary Donaldson who, subsequently also married.

I have been unable to find anything more about any of these families, so any help or leads would be greatly appreciated.
