Perthshire / Where did Grannies brother Andrew Tobit go???
« on: Saturday 11 June 11 11:48 BST (UK)  »
My Grandmother had a brother Andrew Tobit born 1890 in Crosscauseway, Crail.   The family then moved to Stanley to work in the Mills.   Andrews Fa was John Tobit (born East Sussex 1852, died Percy St, Stanley 1924).   Mo was Helen Taylor (born Crail 1853, died Percy St, Stanley 1924).   Married 1874 Shore, Crail.

In the 1911 census Andrew was single with his parents in Percy St and was a belt weaver.

I can find no marriage, death or HM Forces service for Andrew at all.   Where did he go??

Fife / Re: Tobit/Tobbit Stumped (Again!)

Hi Harry - I am also a Harry!

yes I see now where the Scott comes from.   Helen Taylor is my G-grandmother.   Her Mo is Christina or Christian GAY (GG Gmo) and her fa and mo were William Gay and Ann Paterson, all from Crail.

Christina married a James Taylor (1824-1855 b Crail).   He was the Master of the SS Albion lost at sea in the North of Scotland in Dec 1855.   His son Andrew George was born 8 months later in Aug 1856.    AG also married a Gay (Mary Ann)

I have an Andrew Tobit born 1890 in Crail who I cannot find after 1911 - he is in Percy St, Stanley where they moved to from Crail to work in the Mills.   Is he on your tree???

thanks for this Diddymiller

I have now found out that 2 other children were born in Hants so the family must have been down there between 1886 and 1890.   Have also just found the death of Jane Anne Scott Tobbit in 1883.

I still have idea how the name Scott comes into this though.   There is also a gap between marriage 1874 and first born in 1878

I have 2 Tobits in my tree, Fa John Tobit, Mo Helen Taylor.   They are

John Scott Tobit born 3 March 1885 in Shoregate, Crail.   BC shows Helen Mo as informant.

Jane-Anne Scott Tobbit born 22 December 1882 in Shoregate, Crail.   BC shows Christina G'mother as informant.

All parents details and date of Marriage are correct.

However where have they gone???    Not with parents in 1891, 1901 or 1911 census.   No trace of marriage or death.

Elaine

thanks for that.   Now pretty sure that the corrrect date of marriage is 31 Dec 1857.   Marriage was registered in 1858.

MonicaL

thanks for the data on '61 census.   Ann R is Ann Ramsay on 71 census (Mos maiden name)    Did not know about Elizabeth but research draws a blank (on SP) no birth or death, she is not on the 71 census with the rest of the family

Lanarkshire / Hugh Gillan and Janet (Jessie?) Ramsay
« on: Tuesday 31 May 11 11:53 BST (UK)  »
Have 2 queries on both the above.

Hugh and Janet married on 31 Dec 1858 in Rutherglen (I think)   MC seems to be the one.
They then had 6 children:

Ann Ramsay Gillan b 1858
Daniel b 1862
William b 1864
Jessie b 1866
James B 1868
Jane b 1872

All children appear on the censuses between 1871 and 1891 but no trace of Hugh or Janet in 1861?

However the dates of marriage on three of the BCs are different, 1847, 1857 and 1858

on Jessie (Dau BC and DC Fa is shown as Hugh but on her MC (to Robert Robson) her Fa is shown as William and not Hugh and Mo Janet Ramsay.

In the 1871 census Hugh is alive but in the 1881 census Janet is shown as a widow.

Why is William shown on Jessies MC and when did Hugh die????

Scotland / Adam Robson where 1904-1914
« on: Tuesday 17 May 11 19:08 BST (UK)  »
Trying to trace Adam Robson (1866-1929) between the years 1904-1914.   He was a bit of a lad with 14 children by 4 different woman and only married 2 of them.   I have his full history up to 1904 birth of his son Adam by Isabella Mackintosh (not married).   No trace in the 1911 census but he marries again to Mary Palmer in 1914.   He and Mary had 8 children and both died with 7 days of each other in 1929.
