Derry (Londonderry) / Re: Elizabeth Thompson

Hi Elizabeth,
The year was about 1858. I also looked for Scriggan for that time but could find no Thompsons. However there were several Thompsons in the parish of Dungiven which I believe includes Scriggan, but the townland was not given. This might mean that they actually lived in the village. With the names Stewart, Morrison, Irwin and Haslett I thought I had a difficult job but when I looked at the number of Thompsons I do not envy you. Even I have Thompson relatives but they are fairly recent.

Hi E Caldwell,
Looking through some other queries I came across my home townland in a misspelt parish name which should have been Tamlaghtard. I have now got four names for you from 1831.
 John   Ballylaghr(sic)
John   Tercreevan
Jonn   Lamlaghtarde (sic) the incorrect spelling
Widow Caldwell    Lamlaghtarde

Hi E. Caldwell,
I looked up the 1831 census of Co. Londonderryfor caldwells in the Magilligan area and found none. However I did find seven Caldwells in the parish of Tamlaght O'Crilly in the Maghera area and many others in other parishes.
Regarding graveyards in the Magilligan area: I am only aware of three and I was brought up in the area. One is the Presbyterian, One is the Church of Ireland and the Third is the Roman Catholic. The old Roman Catholic church was taken over by the Protestant settlers about 1613 and used for worship until they built the C of I church where you saw it. The old church was handed back to the R.c. church and they were helped to build the church which is there now. I am unsure of dates for this but many of the graves in the raised part of that church will contain protestant burials.
I do not know if this helps or confuses you further but drop me a line if I can help any more.

Hi Elizabeth,
I looked up Thompsons in the Griffith Valuation and found the following in the parish of Bovevagh:-
James   farm of 52 acres  Dernaflaw
Maryanne  House   Camnish
George     House    Camnish
Alexander House and garden  Half acre     Drumneecy
I realise that this is earlier than you were looking for but it may come in handy later.

Agnetta,
I have done a  quick look up and found a John Rosborough in the parish of Banagher(next parish to Bovevagh) and a David Roseberry in the townland of Bovevagh in the parish of Bovevagh in the 1831 census of Londonderry. Spelling in those days was as the enumerator heard the name. There is also an 1831 census for some townlands in the county of Cavan. Hope this helps.
