Thanks Arranroots - now I can rest easy in my bed!

I have had correspondence with the library service in the city but they could not help. Perhaps they were busy anyway. I'll follow your suggestion of the CRO though.

regards

Thanks to both respondents, especially about the third of a virgate. Now I'll be up all night wondering what a virgate is

Hi posters. Some years ago searching parish registers of St Edwards, Leek, Staffs I came across a marriage entry, unconnected to my research. I believe it was circa 1800 and ages of the couple were not usually given. However, this entry read:-

<name><name> and alongside "In the 73rd year of his age!!!!!!"
<name><name> and alongside "In the 23rd year of her age!!!!!"

The exclamation marks were included and I suppose the notes were a form of 'raised eyebrows' on behalf of the vicar. The couple both signed with a 'X' so clearly they did not know of his seeming disapproval.

I did search the burial register to see how long he lasted (or lusted) but never did find him.

Does anyone know of a post 1850's event whereby the rear retaining wall to the graveyard at St Edwards collapsed into the neighbouring Ball Hey Park. I believe there have been two such events. Were the disturbed remains reburied in the graveyard or in the municipal cemetery. Does anyone know of the existence of a burial plan (not the church's card index which is M.I's only) or the actual burial register. All info I have on relatives is from Bishops Transcripts.

My late uncle, Ernest George Sproston NOKES was born in Gloucester in 1894. It was always reputed that he was, along with others born at that time (possibly the same day), made a Freeman of the City to celebrate presumably some event. Can anyone enlighten me as to whether such ceremonial happened and what event could be commemorated. Incidentally, my uncles family were relatively transient, having 13 children, all but two born in widely different locations
