Can I ask how you know this? And do you know where I could find out more about it? Such as admission documents or anything like that? The person I'm researching later became 'on the wrong side of the law' so if this is true it may explain her behaviour.

Staffordshire / Wolverhampton Railway Driver 1910-40s

Hi

My grandfather Daniel James McMillan was a railway driver in Wolverhampton in the early 1900s. In the 1911 census and on his marriage certificate he is listed as a Locomotive fireman with Great Western Rail. I believe he eventually worked his way up and became a Railway driver. I have an actual picture of him looking like he drives the trains. There are family stories that he on occassions drove the Queen. I can't find a document online for his Railway records and assume there must be one somewhere.

I'd like to know if these stories could have possibly been true so I think a lookup would be needed. Also I will be attaching the photograph of him on the train. Could someone tell me about the photo? Is there anything you can tell from his uniform? I'm assuming it is a steam engine train? (He is the one in the centre of the photo).

Thanks Ellie

Yes I see, that would make sense.

I will request a GRO certificate then. Thanks for your help

OK, I shall have to look her up when I can next access the census. I'll be shocked if it was the same school and she had infact been mistreated!

Thanks Ellie

Could there possibly have been two marriages? One a civil and one a religious?

Sorry if I sound stupid but is a transcript sort of a basic document and a GRO certificate a specialised piece of paper for that one marriage.

Thank you getting me the information!

I cannot see the 1911 census anymore as I've had to downgrade my membership. I'm sure they were all children listed on the census but I will have to check when I next can. If you can access the 1911 census for me could you please check?

Thanks Ellie

Thank you! That's great! It's different to what his military records say but I will have to give it a shot.

I really appreciate your help

Ireland / Westport Co Mayo Ireland Marriage Request
« on: Friday 20 April 12 19:16 BST (UK)  »
A Julia Prendergast married a Daniel James McMillan in Westport Co Mayo Ireland on the 30th October 1882

Shee would have been 20 and he 22 at the time. He was serving in the British army at the time.

If it would be possible, could someone please see if they could find out which church they married at and look up the marriage to find the parents etc?

I'm having great difficulty finding both sides as Daniel was from India and Julia seems to come out of nowhere. I've looked around on the internet but cannot seem to find them in the available parish records. If I could have this information it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

One of my relatives Charlotte Smith was attending this school in the 1911 census. She was described as an 'Inmate' and a "Girl In Training". It was a small "school" of 8 girls.

I have recently been told it was known as a 'home for help'. The lady had also found in a directory of 1902 that a Birkenhead & Wirral Children's Shelter (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) was at 131 Vittoria Street.

I think she believes this is the same place but it obviously moved a few years later. I was wondering if anyone had anymore information on the place or whether they could find out about it for me? I have scoured the internet and have had little luck in finding much about it. I want to find out whether she had been mistreated and sent there from her 'home' where her family were, which was in Wolverhampton, which is obviously far away.

Any help much be appreciated!
Ellie
