Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Italian surname

Mesano?

I think the loop following the M is the tail of the capital, which has fallen below the line in Maria. Then a tight e, s, a as in Maria, rather than o, n, and possibly an o as in corrente.

Hello again everyone.

Thought I'd update this thread by a snippet I'd found since our discussion, but overlooked until recently. The Farmilo child, George, recorded on his Holy Trinity christening as born at Stephen's Dale in March 1841, was admitted to the (now "old") RAH in 1877. He gave his place of birth as Glen Osmond!

This aligns with the next Farmilo child's registered birth in 1844 at Glen Osmond and seems to support Grantley's family story.

So, it appears that two of the five 1841 Holy Trinity "Stephen's Dale" baptisms may relate to births in the Glen Osmond area.

Didy.

Thanks for your comments and examples. It was not something I had encountered in the past, since all my forebears were of British origin.

Thank you. I wondered if it might be something of that sort. Does that mean that she would have been unable to be naturalised while her husband was still alive?

Australia / Why was naturalisation needed in early 1914?

The index to Victorian naturalisation certificates records 52 year old Mrs. Ellen Gonne of Ballarat East, whose native place was Australia, being granted a certificate on 5 March 1914.

What would have been the likely purpose for this?

She was the widow of Chinese-born man.

Wiltshire / Children of Isaac & Alice Liddington
« on: Wednesday 15 February 17 01:40 GMT (UK)  »
Isaac Lidington & Alice Ackley married in Charlton 13 Oct 1781. I have the following children:

Mary Liddenton, chr Foxley, 19 May 1782
Isaac Liddington, chr Brokenborough 12 March 1787
Elizabeth  "           "           "              14 Feb 1790
Jacob Liddinton,    "           "              12 Aug 1792
Joseph Lydington, "           "              24 Jan 1795
Richard Liddington, "         "              25 March 1798

There is a suspicious gap of five years between the first two children, where it's possible another child might have been born or possibly buried. I would be grateful for any help in filling this gap, or indeed, any other children of this couple I may have missed. As you can see, the surname has quite a few variations.

Many thanks for your efforts Alan. It's been a little complicated because this Isaac had a son Isaac, christened in 1787, whom I originally thought was most likely the father of my 4th gt-grandmother Martha. South Australian records showed that she was born in 1812 in Wiltshire, and I have her christening at Brokenborough to parents Isaac and Sarah.

Having established that Isaac junior (1787) married and settled with his large family in Churchdown, Glos., where his family did include a slightly younger Martha, I had to have another look at Isaac senior (1755). It only works if his first wife Alice had died, but that may be difficult to prove. He must also have been a healthy specimen, who would have been 63 when the third and last child was born to him and Sarah in 1818.

An earlier searcher had given me a burial date of 12 June 1828 for Isaac senior, which is a year later than the one you have quoted. Would it be possible for you to double-check that for me? It's not on Ancy, and your 1827 makes Sarah's remarriage in October 1828 look a little less hasty.

Kind regards,
Didy
