As a lad, I too, splashed around in the pre-war Castle Mills swimming pool in fact it was in their filtered River Bollin water I threw off my water wings.

A close relation William Crosby b1832- farmed 50 acres at Castle Hill Farm (Ref: 1861 census.)

May I thank all other writers who have so kindly taken their time to reply

I am now encourage into further FH research.

Ray Crosby.

Lancashire / Victorian Tenant Farmers -Cuerdley etc
« on: Monday 10 March 08 14:59 GMT (UK)  »
Land tenanted for farming in the Hale, West Derby, Prescot, Cuerdley, Farnworth area of Lancs seemed to have ended c1812 when the farming community moved across the Mersey into the Cheshire Plains. The land was owned by Sir R. Brooke, Bart.,

Is there any known reason why this mass movement of Farmers should have had their tenancies terminated.

My Gt x 2 grandfather farmed there and finished up farming at Daresbury, Cheshire.  A good number of his 18th century line rest at St. Mary's Hale.

Thank you   Ray

Hi Lisa, Welcome to Rootschat England.

John Barlow b1855 (your Gt Grandfather) married Mary Pollitt (the sister of my Gt Grandfather John Pollitt Jnr) at St George's Church, Hyde, Cheshire in 1879.
Mary was the daughter of John Pollitt Snr. and Mary Yates (the last of 8 children).
John Pollitt snr (1805-1854) was the Schoolmaster of Denton School House, Denton, Lancashire, a Clerk of the Chapel and Superintendent of the Sunday School.  His wife Mary (1805 - 1884) was Schoolmistress. Both are buried St Lawrence Church, Denton, Lancashire.

John Barlow and wife Mary, prior to leaving UK for America, lived at 39 Haughton Green Road, Denton, Lancashire.  I have a photograph of this house taken 2006 which I will get to you these coming days.

Archive Photographs of the area can be see here >

          http://www.tameside.gov.uk/history/archive.php3

Scroll down the opening page and tap in 'Haughton Green'

In the 1871 UK census we have at - 86 Manchester Road, Hyde, Cheshire
James Barlow 50   Plumber & Glazier
Mary A Barlow 47  wife
John Barlow 16    (your Gt Grandfather) Printer Compositor.
Sarah A Barlow 14  Cotton Weaver
Alice Barlow 11
Annie Barlow 4

The whole Barlow family gave Hyde in Cheshire as their place of birth.

Back again soon.

Annie/Celia.  Thanks for your prompt replies.  I am a member of the Cheshire FHS (Runcorn Branch) My quest is to find a memorial to the employees of the L & N.W.R. who gave their lives in the Great War.  I will contact the Crewe Branch of the CFHS to see if they can help.  Until you mentioned it I had not given the idea any thought.  Well done.  I feel progress coming on.   Ray.
