Somerset Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1841/1851 - GILSON (Holcombe area)

Hi Sue

Thank you - this looks as if it will be the right family - James and Susan(nah) and Lydia are in Stratton on the Fosse on 1861, and this family has links to that village as well.  Richard and his family are living next door but one to Charles in Holcombe .... looks very hopeful indeed!  I'll research a bit more based on the different ages!!!

Many thanks.

Su

Somerset Completed Lookup Requests / 1841/1851 - GILSON (Holcombe area)
« on: Tuesday 12 July 05 09:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I'm currently working on the top end of my Gilson/Heal tree and am trying to find parents or siblings for Charles Gilson (born c1830/31 in Holcombe, Somerset).  He is shown as married to Matilda Heal(Hale) on 1861 and their eldest child, Temperance Sarah is born in Wales in 1854 - their other children are all born in Somerset.  Unfortunately I cannot find a marriage registration for Charles and Matilda, so am unable to find father's name for Charles.  Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Thanks, Forest - they are no doubt part of the family!  I'll keep this information, as you never know when these things will finally fall into place!!!

If anyone is checking up the 1841 or 1851 Worminster area census, grateful if you'd be kind enough to see if there is any trace of a Sarah Plumley born c1833/1834.  Trying desperately to locate her with her parents ... or other family.

For info - on 1861 she is a dairymaid (age 28) at Bodden Farm, Bodden, Doulting, nr Shepton Mallet.  Her birthplace is noted as Worminster, Somerset.  Between 1863 and 1864 she gives birth to my gt-gt grandmother and her sister but there is no trace of a husband, although I believe the older child may have been registered with her father's surname as I can find no trace of her birth certificate; the younger daughter's birth certificate has no father's name.  Sarah dies in Shepton Mallet in January 1870 age 36 years - her death certificate describes her as the widow of William Plumley, ag lab, but I now think this may be a red herring!

Thank you

Su

Hi Sue

Even more thanks ... now that I've matched the info you've given up with what I have, I've realised that Ellen's sister, Matilda, was also one of the witnesses on Ellen and George's wedding cert ... Matilda Gilson!  Now I can trace some more links in this chain.

Thank you!

Hi

That is brilliant!!  Thank you so much ... it was only Ellen's family I needed.  George also has a mining family and they are hiding in Wales on 1861 - George is the one who starts off spelling their surname with the double B.  His father, Elisha Robins, was born in Holcombe c1821 and his father is down as William Robins on his marriage cert, but he was married in Wales in 1843, so the older side of the family are probably hiding there on 1841 and 1851 as well!  Thanks for looking, though!
