Thanks David. Seems like he survived Spion Kop, only to die from disease. The lot of a few, I should think. I'm off to do some more reading on the Boer War.

Ooh, thanks David for such a quick reply and such a full one!! It's so nice being able to put a "full-stop" to the story.

I'll tell my mother-in-law this afternoon when we visit her. Unfortunately, she has recently had to go into a care home, hence the sorting out of her things!

His QSA has two clasps - Relief of Ladysmith and Tugela Heights. His letter home can be read here http://www.binghamheritage.org.uk/newsletters/NLMar09_sm.pdf. The detail he gives is very interesting!

The next thing to do, I think is to try and get his enrollment form from the National Archives to see how he came to enroll in Thorneycroft's MI.

Thanks again. Your knowledge is invaluable!!

Hi

I wonder if anyone could help me find out where my husband's great-uncle is buried.

Yesterday I found the QSA medal of John Edward Gill amongst my mother-in-laws things. After deciphering the information on the rim, and spending the afternoon on the net, I have discovered quite a bit about him. He joined Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry on 27 Oct 1899 and died of Enteric on 4 June 1900. I even found a letter that was written by him to his parents on 4th Dec 1899 and published in the Nottingham Daily Express on 8 Jan 1900. All I need to do now if find out where he was buried. He died in Dundee (SA) - from a search on http://www.roll-of-honour.com.

Thanks!

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: 1939 Registration

Thanks for answering so quickly!

I really must learn to read things properly. I had read the terms and conditions, but had got confused! So, it was like a census and the information was taken where they were. In that case, I go for the hospital address which was my first instinct until I started reading the terms and conditions!!!

Thank You!!!

I have been following this topic with keen interest and I wonder if someone could help me.

My grandfather was in Bracebridge Heath Hospital (lunatic asylum!) Lincoln from 1933 until his death in 1945. I desperately need a date of birth for him as I can find no record of his birth, but do I apply for information giving his home address or the hospital address. Would a mental hospital be his permanent address?  I was all set to apply with the hospital address as I know he was living there in 1939, but his death certificate has his home address on it as well as the fact that he died at the hospital.

I don't want to give the wrong one and waste £42!!
