If this Ann Spatchurst is the lady who married William Balcome I can give you more information about the family from the index to the church registers of St John the Baptist, West Wickham.

John & Elizabeth had 6 children baptised in West Wickham:
George, bap 29 Dec 1748
Ann, bap 2 Aug 1751
John, Elizabeth (twins) bap 9 Feb, bur 16 Feb 1754/5
Elizabeth, 30 May 1759
William, b 8 Mar, bap 3 Apr 1763.

There are records that George was buried 7 Apr 1798, John was buried 13 Apr 1792, Elizabeth (mother/daughter?) was buried 25 Feb 1783.

John was in turn the son of William & Ann Spatchurst & they had 4 children baptised in West Wickham:
Ann, bap 15 Apr 1718, bur 13 Mar 1723
William, bap 20 Mar 1719/20
John, bap 30 Sep 1722
Martin, bap 11 Feb, bur 14 Feb 1724/5

Ann (wife of William) was buried 18 Feb 1724/5.  William (the son?) was buried 17 Jul 1782.

It does seem quite possible that this is your Ann who became wife of William Balcomb who lived in West Wickham.  It would seem natural to settle in the village in which she grew up & the Christian names seem to be passed down the family, although that may be coincidence.

Regards,

champagne03.

If you are still coming to Bromley and to Local Studies Dept.  - there are no parish records for St. John's, West Wickham in Bromley Library.  It's to do with the Mormons  -  don't ask!  There is an Index of the parish registers in Local Studies.  There are single entriesin the Bromley Settlement Examinations for 1)   John Coote (wife Susan)  when he was living in Keston in 1774:  Ref. 613/2/102  2) Solomon Judd (wife Sarah) when he was living in Cudham in 1783. Ref.613/2/305,  and 3. Thomas Venner   when he was living in Cudham in 1783 Ref.  613/2/308.  also check out the Bromley Militia Lists - they can give helpful personal lists.

Re the Bromley Settlement Examinations -  William was not born at Frittenden as I suggested,  Frittenden was mentioned in the examination.

In 1797 in the Bromley Militia Lists there is mention of a William Balcomb aged 24 husbandman (a tenant farmer) being substituted for Lord Gwydir.

In c1800 the Field Book of Lord Gwydir's holdings show that a William Balcomb rented a tenement ( a rented dwelling) and part of a garden measuring 37 perches.  A perch = 16 and a half feet.

In 1812 Francis Bawcombe was excused military service "having but one eye"

he Bromley settlement Examinations for 1774 include an entry William Balcomb and wife Ann indicating that they were married at Holborn.  Frittenden is also mentioned - I believe is where William was born.  I;ll check this out.  The full entry may be inspected at Bromley Local studies Dept   under Ref: 2/76 or perhaps they could look it up for you?

That's all for now'  Regards
