My gggrandmother was Jane Gavney or Gaffney, born in Ireland, and married James Carroll. Their daughter was Johanna Carroll my ggrandmother who immigrated to the USA (New Orleans} Johanna was born in early 1860's. Had two children: Samuel Nevin Hodges born 1887 and Sophia Hodges, born 1885. Robert Hodges was the father of her children. Johanna immigrated in 1896 (?) and married a Louis Brandt in New Orleans in 1902. She used the last name Hodges until she married Louis Brandt.  I seek information on Johanna's family. Does this soundf like her mother Jane Gavney of Gaffney could be among your Gaffneys?

Thank you for responding. The name on the marriage registration is very clearly written GAVNEY.
Not certain where to go from here.

I have reason to believe at least one of them may have been Roman Catholic as their daughter Johanna was Roman Catholic. We found their names on Johanna's marriage certificate to Louis Brandt in New Orleans, 1902. We believe that Johanna was born in Ireland but we are unable to locate a birth registration for her.Her two children were Sophia Hodges and Samuel Hodges (Samuel was born in Swellan, Co. Cavan, Ireland on Jan. 1, 1887.)  Sophie believed to be born in 1885-86 in Ireland but we do not have a birth record for her either. Robert Hodges (CoI) was their father but we have not been able to locate a marriage record for Robert and Johanna. She did use the name Hodges when she settled in Louisiana.

We are at a bit of a road block at this point.
Thanks,
Shirley

Seeking info on this married couple who married in 1840's to mid 1850's. They had a daughter Johanna Carroll who was born in 1870 in Ireland and later emigrated to U.S. circa 1893 and settled in New Orleans, LA.

Dublin / Mariner records of Samuel Nevin Hodges
« on: Thursday 29 September 11 05:30 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather Samuel Nevin Hodges (DOB 01 January 1887), born in County Cavan but residing in County Cork or Dublin at age 13 went to sea as a "ship's boy" and maintained that occupation before settling in New Orleans, LA, USA circa 1913-1916.  Is there any way I can obtain records relating to his sea duty and whether he was actually with the British Admiralty or a commercial vessel?  In 1917 I know he was employed as a mariner with the United Fruit Company.

James Rutherford is listed in the 1917 Orleans Parish Death Index. You may obtain a copy from:
The Louisiana Archives
P.O. Box 94125
Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9125
Listing in Volume 170, Page 531

website:  usgwarchives.org/la/orleans/vitals/deaths/index19

New Orleans was one of the largest ports in the US in the early part of the 20th century with much shipping and trade. A marine engineer could easily find work there.

Hurriccane Katrina damaged many records in New Orleans. Much of the city was under water. Churches also maintained records if you know the area of the city or its suburbs and the relligion of the family . I grew up in New Orleans but have not been there in quite a few years.

I do not know any dates except marriage.  Her son Jacob Henry Wilson was born June 14, 1833 or 1839. I am  making an assumption that she may have been born 1818-1822. But this is an ASSUMPTION.
