Jorose,

Brilliant.

Thanks very very much for that - absolutely spot on for Alice Clarke, but I'll have to investigate in slow time.  I'll also check whether her daughter Mabel married a W.T.Ryan.

Oddly enough, I'd  zeroed in on the McCulloughs in Ottawa/Pomona Kansas in the 1870 Census, but I don't know if Margaret is a Smith or a Barnes (yet).  The attached Will didn't really set a train of thought running in my mind - it was all a bit too tenuous and I wasn't sure of my logic.  Foolish.

Can you confirm how you accessed the Ellis Island records - I should have done that but I've obviously missed a trick.

Alaways happy to be guided by experts.

Many thanks, you've made a confused delver happy.

Regards

Simon

Thanks for that - there's another Hope Cemetery burials list posted somewhere out there that gives both the graves.

Now where were they before Hope Cemetery, Alice Clarke is down as a servant in the Turner Family in the 1920 Census at 3751 Paris, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri in 1920, immigrating in 1913.

No real leads on the Smith connection.

Folks

I've been doing a fair bit of research on USA family history, but I now appear to have an unexpected connection in a state I'm unfamiliar with.

I believe Elizabeth A J Smith (b 11 Jun 1855 possibly Charles Street, Victoria Square or Baneswell/St Woolos Newport, Monmouthshire) daughter of George Esan Smith (Saddler) & Elizabeth Barnes emigrated to the USA (Kansas City) where she appears to have married Arthur John Smith (or she may have emigrated with him).  She's buried in Hope Cemetery Ottawa Kansas (d 4 Apr 1916).

Certainly her death card returned to the UK and came in to the possession of her cousins (the Wagstaffs).

Her sister Alice b 13 Mar 1862 Newport (who appears to have married a Charles Ed Clarke b 1857 Victoria, Australia) lives in Newport & Cardiff, before emigrating to Kansa City in the 1900s, where she dies 27 Jul 1924 and is also buried in Hope Cemetery Ottawa Kansas.

Now I've done the UK, US Census and emigration records (no firm date), and it appears to match, but does anybody have any recommendations for good links to these or further information ?

Thanks

Simon

PS If  anyone was watching this, a related query on the emigrants to USA board came up trumps.

Many thanks for this, you are absolutely correct in your Census info - Sarah and Charlotte were visiting William Henry Pope's father Richard in 1861.

All the other Census references match too.  WHP was a Mason.

Dear Cell

Many Thanks for that.  And a servant from Llandybie.....

Particular thanks for the 1891 info - it may well be John Bevan Morgan - I only found out about him on Friday.

Yet again rootschat people turn up trumps.

Many Thanks again

Simon

Sorry  :-\about the confusion over the reference - but both are as you deduced.

Thanks very much for that - I''m glad I'm not the only one baffled by this title. ???

That's the David Morgan born Llanelli c 1799, married to Harriet b 1812 Llandybie - now does anyone have the Census text for the Castle Inn & Hll Street in 1841/1851.

From the 1861 Census I think the Castle in may have been taken over by another Morgan relative ?
