I've just found a baptism record for my great gran Mary Ann Ward. Her mother is named as Mary Clahessy. Has anyone heard of this surname. I can't find it anywhere. She is roman catholic from Midleton, Cork

Yes, I thought Bradford on Avon, just outside Trowbridge, BINGO. but when I sent for the birth certificate there was no record, so I sent off to the GRO and they said it was a mistake, That should be Bradford, Yorkshire. So I jumped back to square 1 :(

Thank you Kathy, I'll look into that one. My George was in the army by the time the 1861 census was taken so I will have to look for this other George and see if he has disappeared on that census. Fingers crossed.  ;)

Thanks Carole, you've certainly given me food for thought. He enlisted in the army as a Roberts so I'll keep on my idea for now but I'll bear in mind your comments. Cheers  :)

Hi Carole thank you for your interest
I'm afraid there was no mention of occupation, just James Roberts deceased. There are three possible marriages in Wiltshire for James Roberts. Dec'qtr 1843, March qtr 1846 & June qtr 1849. Any one of them could be the step father of my George. I'm still working on this line of thought. Cheers  ;)

Wiltshire / Finding an illigitimate ancestor

I am having trouble finding the birth certificate of my g grandfather George Roberts. According to the 1891, 1901 census and his army records, he was born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire. He enlisted in the 1st battalion The Wilts' regiment at Trowbridge on 19th June 1860 at the age of 18. He spent 22years in the army, most of them in Canada & India. He was discharged on 18th April1882 aged 40 years & 4 months (born about January 1842). He was married in India to a 25year old widow and names his father as James Roberts deceased. I have contacted the Wiltshire Registrar and the GRO but there is no record of a George Roberts for around that date. I am thinking he was born illegitimate and his mother married a James Roberts who gave him his surname.
Can anyone advise me what to try next. :(
