Thanks everyone! I did have the laptop with me whilst I was away and did a bit of "googling" whilst in the caravan but the signal wasn't that great and pages took ages to load so I gave up. Another holiday in that area is on the cards I think.
 ;D

That's very interesting. I wouldn't have thought that this family could have afforded to pay for a private asylum, although perhaps that is why Dad and the boy went to live with his brother. She died around 1864 - I think I am definitely going to have to get her death certificate. I will then know what I am dealing with. Thank you very much!

Yes that's a good idea Ruskie - it is a very interesting family actually as one of Lavinia's children (my Great Grandmother) was sent to live with her aunts from the age of 3 and was listed on the 1871 census as "niece", occupation "laundress", and one of the aunts (the head of the household) was listed as "imbecile". I have since found another female relative in the same family (and it might be the same one although the name is slightly different) listed as "deaf". The father took the son off to live with his brother and sister-in-law when Lavinia was admitted, and re-married after she died.

Might have to shelve this one until the summer holidays when I will have a bit more time - I am working non-stop (including weekends) up until early July now so time is very short.

Many thanks to everyone for all their suggestions - very helpful!

Not to worry - I thought I must have checked it but couldn't remember why I couldn't find anything. At least you have confirmed what I thought. Hey ho - what is family research anyway without a bit of a mystery eh?  ;)

Been out all day so haven't had chance to look at the other links yet, but Ruskie that is a very kind offer thank you!

Lavinia Hindom (sometimes spelt Hindon) nee Warren
DOB  1832 Devon
married to John Hindom (carpenter) she is listed as Carpenter's wife at the Asylum in 1861

Is that enough?

Thanks Ruskie. I had found all the links except the last one so will explore that further. Unfortunately I cancelled my subscription to Ancestry (as I was at the point of never finding any useful records for most and had got back to the 1700's for many ancestors) so although I saved the original sheet for my ancestor on the census, I can't now view the pages before that. Although I do remember doing that at some point to try and find out the address but was unsuccessful. However at the time I had no thoughts about physically going to look for the building so it was less of a priority.

I think also perhaps I need to try and locate her actual death certificate as that might give me some clues as to what she died from and where she might be buried. I have a theory that she might have had another child around that time and suffered from post natal depression but I have to source it more fully first.

Many thanks anyway - interesting stuff!

Devon / WARREN and Lake families of Devon
« on: Wednesday 04 May 11 05:26 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the Warren and Lake families in Devon (Bishopsteignton, Chudleigh, Milton Abbott area) and photographed a few tombstones whilst I was visiting at Easter. Not all of them are my direct ancestors so if anyone else here is hunting these names, let me know and I will see if I have anything.

Devon / St Thomas Lunatic Asylum, Exeter

One of my ancestors was a patient at St Thomas Lunatic Asylum, Exeter in the 1860's and died in 1864. Does anyone know of any records available for this building for that time? She turned up there on the 1861 census but I don't know where to start looking for her grave, if she had one. We visited the area over Easter but couldn't find any trace of her in her home village or surrounding area (Milton Abbott, Chudleigh etc) and couldn't even find a proper address on Satnav for St Thomas Asylum even though we found on the internet that it still exists.

Anyone have any ideas?
