Unwanted Birth, Marriage, Death Certs H to M / Birth, Nelly Jones 1907
« on: Saturday 02 April 11 14:01 BST (UK)  »
I have a copy of the birth certificate for :

Nelly Jones, born 20th May 1907. Father - William Henry Jones, Mineral Water Manufacturer's Assistant Mother Sarah Alice Jones formerly "blank", Residence - 94 Hospital Street, Nantwich. Registered 1st July 1907

I was hoping that this was my grandmother - Nellie or Nelly Jones born 22/07/1907, the daughter of a boatman; John Jones who travelled from the Midlands to Ellesmere Port past Nantwich - sadly it wasn't - my quest continues!!

Shropshire Completed Look up Requests / Re: Kinlet Workhouse
« on: Wednesday 16 March 11 07:46 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Paul.

I'll have a look at that website later.

I do have those details. It was Eleanor that was seemingly living in the poorhouse. She had 3 girls; none had a father listed on their Christening record and in each case Eleanor's abode was given as the poorhouse. Sadly two of the girls died in infancy, again their abode was listed as the poorhouse.

Very sad.

Thanks again. Will post any info I find.

Shropshire Completed Look up Requests / Kinlet Workhouse
« on: Sunday 13 March 11 07:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have an ancestor who's abode is given as the Poorhouse / Workhouse on her children's transcribed Christening records between 1828 - 1836. All of her children were christened at St John the Baptist in Kinlet. I've not been able to find any info of a workhouse in Kinlet and wondered if anyone could help? Or suggest where I should look. Surname - Welsbury.

Thanks again Trish.

I'd not managed to find Joseph on the 1851 Census - every one but that one!  So I'll take a look and add that info to  my tree.

I've not got the marriage certificate for Joseph & Julia, but I'm pretty sure that Samuel & Mary are Joseph's parents. I think I'll leave it at that for now.

I'd already found the death of Samuel in 1846. But I think that Mary's death was in 1873 in Birmingham.  She appears to still be living with son; John & his wife Elizabeth in 1871 in Ladywood, Birmingham (Source RG10/3093/122 p13) so the Mary Barwell who died in Barrow on Soar must be someone else.

I'd not looked for Sarah as yet but will check out the Temple Hall reference, sounds interesting!!

Thanks very much for your help again Trish.

Thanks very much Nemo for the tips.  I will try them all later once the kids are tucked up in bed!!!  I knew a little about the location of Kinlet & Upper Arley.  I originate from Wolverhampton so not too far away.   I've been using Familysearch in both it's old & new format and recently someone pointed me in the direction of their pilot site which is great but I'll certainly try your 3rd tip later.

Thanks again. Will post any updates.

Hi Trish

Thanks so much for taking the time to look up the Barwell info. It's my husband that is descended from the Barwells.  His GGG grandfather from his mother's side of the family was Joseph Barwell born 1835.

I did have some of the Census info as I'm subscribed to Ancestry but I hadn't found Mary on the 1861 Census so thanks very much for that.

I came across this page on Geneolgy.com yesterday that confirms your thoughts on the Samuel Barwell & Mary Booth marriage -

http://www.genealogy.com/genealogy/users/h/e/e/Scott-Heeley/index.html

All this info has confirmed my research / assumptions on where Joseph Barwell was from.  There are several trees on Ancestry showing him as the son of Joseph Barwell (abt 1805) & Mary French from Great Bowden in Leicestershire. This didn't seem quite right to me, it just didn't fit with him then moving to Birmingham.  I had no idea where Nailstone was but once I'd seen that it was to the south west of Leicester it seemed to make far more sense that Nailstone was where he originated from.  I've traced him back through the Census's but him birthplace was inconsistant - Milston, Nelson even Naulstone, Latvia! - very imaginative transcription indeed - but all conceivably Nailstone given the fact that he was probably illiterate and held a strong East Midlands accent :O)

Are you descended from the Barwell's yourself?

Ofcourse she could be his daughter in law and the widow of his son who could have also have been Samuel. So frustrating!

I had a look at the website your link refers to - excellent! I have been using Familysearch but not the pilot site. Will definatel add it to my list.

Thanks again, Karen

Thanks so much for that. I will check out the site later but, already answers one query - Samuel was definately the spouse of Mary. Wasnt too sure due to large age difference.

Thanks again.
