Armed Forces / Re: My Mother - a WAAF

Thank you bbart, that's a terrific help. If my mother was in the Black Building, then one of your pictures shows where she would have sat. Shame the place was so vandalised prior to demolition. Shows the mentality of the people our parents fought a war for.
Thank you so much again, it means a lot to me.
Kind Regards

Thank you Andy. As far as I know, my mother wasn't on a radar station, she was plotting air traffic. There was a regular high-level German plane that flew over that they nicknamed 'Weather Willie' as he was monitoring the weather conditions. She also tracked what turned out to be Hess' plane as it approached and landed on Hamilton's estate.
So that leaves Skaebrae and Grimsetter but I don't know which she was stationed at.
I'm very grateful for the information.
regards

Armed Forces / 2 Gordons 1944
« on: Sunday 24 March 24 12:44 GMT (UK)  »
My late father landed in Normandy with 2 Gordons some days after D-Day and advanced towards Caen. They never reached it as the field they were told was clear had German machine guns and mortars in the hedges at the side. Of the 900 men who started,100 reached the other end. My father was wounded and eventually air-lifted home and returned to Germany after the war with the CCG.
My question is, does anyone know about this action - possibly part of Operation Goodwood or Epsom.
It took place in late June 1944 in a field with hedgerows all round and a river at the bottom.
Having attended a Drumhead service on the beach when they landed, my father never went to church again.
Many thanks
AJ

Armed Forces / My Mother - a WAAF
« on: Sunday 24 March 24 12:36 GMT (UK)  »
My late mother was LACW 1 stationed in Orkney in WW2. She became what was called Ops B, which meant manning the phone that looked down on the map board.
There was, apparently, an RAF post just outside the town called 'The Black building.' She never mentioned her place of work by this name and I wondered if there was another station on the island.
She left the WAAF in 1944 when she found out she was expecting me and returned to the mainland across the Pentland Firth in a flat-bottomed boat. It was a horrendous crossing as the sea was rough.
Any details of the station on Orkney would be grteatly appreciated.

Kent / Re: My DEAL surname interests
« on: Friday 22 March 24 11:21 GMT (UK)  »
Yes, it did. I came across your post when I rejoined and notice that you are descended from Henry Axon. From the booklet 'The Axon Family of Deal and Walmer' which lists all Axons and their dates, John Guard Axon was one of ten children of Henry David Axon, (24) Mariner of Walmer and Jane Sellaway (23) of Lewisham, d/o William Sellaway, Cooper. They married at St Mary's Church, Upper Walmer 6 March 1872.
Henry was one of twelve children of William and Elizabeth Axon.
You're quite right about the boating tragedy. The lugger Petrel was owned by Alfred George Axon who set sail inMarch 1878 and was never seen again. The empty vessel was found drifting and half full of water off Brixham with no sign of the crew. The Petrel was brought back to Walmer, refitted and renamed Walmer Castle.
On 15 March 1892 the Walmer Castle sank in Horseshoe Bay, IOW with all hands including Henry David Axon, skipper and owner and his brother David Charles Axon (not your Henry, they were the children of William and Elizabeth). All the crew werepilots looking for ships needing a pilot off the Isle of Wight. Other crew members were James Hoile, William Gilchrist,James armold and William Cushney. All are buried in Shanklin cemetery.
I hope this is of some help to you
Kind regards
Alastair

Hello Graham
I have rejoined Rootschat with difficulty after a long absence and am able to provide information about the Axon family but am sending this in advance to make sure it works.

Kent Lookup Requests / Re: Northboure PRs
« on: Saturday 12 March 22 12:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Gillian,
Long shot, I know, but as here are no Rammells recorded in the surrounding parishes at that time, I looked in St Leonard's Deal records and there are four children baptised to William and Mary Marsh in 1705/8/9/15. Marsh was a very big family so this may well not be the right one but it's the only one I can find whose dates are roughly right.

I have the Northbourne PR's and there is only one Rammell mentioned. Mary ROMMEL married William MARSH 28 May 1695.
