The Common Room / Re: Died in the workhouse: why?
« on: Wednesday 22 November 23 18:55 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the replies. Mary Ann Kennedy died of 'chronic rheumatism and exhaustion' according to the death certificate, so perhaps it was too difficult for the family to care for her. I don't think money would have been an issue, since the family were running a successful confectionery business in Chepstow (assumed to be successful, given the number of years before, and after Mary's death, that it was trading).

The Common Room / Died in the workhouse: why?
« on: Tuesday 21 November 23 13:11 GMT (UK)  »
I've come across a bit of an enigma in my research. Matthew Kennedy of Chepstow died on 18th January 1898, aged 75, at a property in Chepstow adjacent to his son's business premises. His son, James, was the informant on the death cert. Forty-one days later, Matthew's second wife, Mary Ann, died aged 68. One might have thought that Matthew's wife, if not in hospital when she died, would at least have been in the care of his family. However, she died in the Chepstow Union Workhouse. The informant was the workhouse master.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to why someone might be in the workhouse, when close family lived nearby. Obviously there are numerous possibilities that might account for the situation, but I'd be interested in any thoughts on the matter.

Many thanks,
Chris.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: William Brooks, 1851 census

Thanks Neale,
Unfortunately I don't have access to FindMyPast. I do have access to Ancestry, but I couldn't find any confirmed military records for William Brooks.  The link that ShaunJ provided gave access to FindMyPast British Army Service Records 1760-1915 Transcription, but it seems this record set is not available on Ancestry.

Just looking at the army record. Nearly 31 years of service, 1812-1843.

Yes, joined when he was 15. I'm now trying to find out more about him, and the regiment as it was in the early 1800s.

Edit: what was the source for the information given on reply #4 ?  Birth date 19 Feb 1797 etc.
The parish register (available on Ancestry).
Transcription also available on FamilySearch.

Got it. Thanks. As you say, the transcript is difficult to read.

Thank-you all for the excellent responses.

Thanks Neale for your investigative work and the link. Great stuff. The military connection is completely unexpected, based on other aspects of the family in question.

Edit: what was the source for the information given on reply #4 ?  Birth date 19 Feb 1797 etc.

Hello,

Would anyone care to offer an opinion on the attached image?

It's the 1851 census, occupation and PoB

I'm thinking he's an army pensioner, born at, or in, 'York Armoury' ?

Thanks,
Chris.

The Common Room / Revision Court
« on: Friday 10 November 23 20:18 GMT (UK)  »
On researching a particular individual in 1905, lodging in Chepstow, I've come across his application to be added to the electoral register. The application was made in the Revision Court of Chepstow. From reading the newspaper report of the applications (thanks, FindMyPast for the current free access!), it's clear what the purpose of the court is, but I can't find anything online, at least not for the UK. Can anyone point me in the direction of something that gives a summary of the Revision Court?
Thanks,
Chris.
