Ireland / *** COMPLETE *** Cork / Kilkenny prison records for 1920
« on: Friday 03 August 12 11:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello Everyone,

Does anyone know where I might access the Cork and/or Kilkenny prison records for 1920?

That is, apart from familysearch.org? (who do have the record I'm looking for but I cannot view!)  :)

Many Thanks,
SuasAnAbhainn.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Name on census record
« on: Friday 27 January 12 10:05 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks everyone - never expected so many thoughtful replies!!

My first instinct was Louise but could not really convince myself.

I think I'll go with Leione - it's a bit more exotic  :)

The Census was 1911, Ireland.

Much Appreciated,
SuasAnAbhainn.

Armed Forces / Hussars in Dublin / India
« on: Sunday 27 November 11 00:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hello again,

I've been told that a Dublin relation of mine 'was in the Hussars' and 'was in India circa 1916'.

That's the only detail I have - apart from a poor quality photo showing said relation in a 'hot-weather-sytle' uniform i.e. short trousers.

Can anyone advise how I might investigate further?

Which of the Hussar regiments were in Dublin at that time? Which of those went to India?

Appreciate any help,
SuasAnAbhainn.

Occupation Interests / Dublin Millwrights, mid 1800's
« on: Saturday 26 November 11 03:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Everyone!

Hope someone might share a few thoughts.

I'm researching an ancestor who is described firstly as an 'engineer', and then later as a 'millwright' - twenty-odd years later!

Some questions:
To what extent are the words 'engineer' and 'millwright', interchangeable?
Are they equivalent terms, or is one considered more senior than the other?
Would there have been a 'career progression' from one to the other?
Would there have been 'guild of millwrights' or similar?

I suppose I'm really looking for a way to progress my research into Dublin millwrights in the 1800s!  :)

Cheers & Thanks,
SuasAnabhainn
