Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: James Spence
« on: Tuesday 04 April 06 20:40 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for your help. I do show that by the 1861 census, Jams Spence has a new wife< Mary ann (from the u.s.) and their son Hubert was my great-granddad. How do I get a copy of a marriage certificate for him?  I live in TX (although my daughter is attending school at the U of Manchester)

I have found my great great grandfather, James Spence b. 1816 in Liverpool in all of the 1851-1891 census.. Is there anything in the 1841 census?  Also, would love to find out names of his parents, have hit a dead end (the only hint I have is that his father was a sea captain)

Just had a couple more questions if anyone's free... I noticed a couple of addresses in the census of 1871 and 1881 for James Spence (father of Hubert), they were Ladbroke Terrace London Kensington (1881 census) and Abercromby #77, (1871 census),  are such places still around? If so, what type area is it or was it back then?  I've never been to the UK so these areas are unfamiliar to me.  (I live in TX)....Also, was it common for servants to stick around at a household?  I noticed a Mary Harmon listed in the 1871-1891 census still faithfully serving, what would have happened to her when the old guy (James kicked) would she have received anything to retire on, or be in a will? ( just curious) Any way to find out what happened to her (since she probably raised my ancestors),I hope she was well treated and was allowed to retire.

I would love any info on my great granddad Hubert DeLaserre Spence born 1868 in Liverpool.  His father was listed as James Spence and his mother Mary Ann (unknown maiden name) was a US citizen.  I noticed in the 1871 census he was 12 and his father was listed as an iron merchant. That's all I have, if anyone can help, there were about 10 siblings, so there must be something out there.  Thanks

Am looking for the "real" family name of my great grandfather. He was born in 1857, said his family had lived at Gyrn castle at one time. (Possibly the youngest of 17 children). Trying to find out if Spence was the family name or had been changed.  Surely with that many kids, there must be some relatives around.  Thanks!
