Other Countries / India - Esther Mary O'Neal born Poona, Oct 1905
« on: Sunday 22 April 18 03:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm trying to find out what happened to my Grandfather's (Clifford Gordon Patrick O'Neal b. 1886, Poona, India) young sister - Esther Mary O'Neal. She was born 14 Oct 1905 in Poona and baptised 19 Oct 1905.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGCS-FXP - Esther Mary O'Neal, "India, Births and Baptisms, 1786-1947"

Her parents were John William O'Neal (aka - William John O'Neal , William Patrick O'Neal, Patrick O'Neal, Willie - these names are mentioned in various documents and family letters) and his second wife Helena Rebecca Sanger (aka - Lena O'Neal).

Esther's mother Lena died 15 Oct 1905 , the day after Esther was born.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGKS-65S - Patrick O'Neal in entry for Lena O'Neal, "India Deaths and Burials, 1719-1948"

I would love to find out what happened to Esther as I have no more information on her. Did she survive, who bought her up, did she stay in India, marry, have children, etc?  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

 Thanks in advance,
      Sandi

Yes Sandra, Mary Jane and Jennie are one and the same person.

Also, thanks to RJ137 for all your  Newspaper articles - all helps to build a picture of these families.

Hi Sandra,
Thanks so much for all your help. Not only have you given me information on George H Ritchie, wife Annie Davidson and their family in USA, you have also 'read my mind' by supplying me information on his brother Thomas, wife Agnes Smith and his family, also in the USA....this was going to be my next post!!

I now have to sort it all out and enter the information into my family tree.

Much appreciated,
        Sandi

Wow Sandra and RJ137, thanks so much for all your input and help. Much appreciated.  Will now have to sort it all out into chronological order and see if/where it all fits.

Do we have any ideas on what the family members did as occupations and also the sons that married - did they have any children?

Was there any reason for them living in Quincy?  Was it the centre of something in the 1920's onwards.

Sandi

P.S. does anyone know when the USA 1950 Census will be available to search through?

Hi, I'm trying to find any information on George H Ritchie and his family when they moved from Scotland to the USA.

George Herschell Ritchie was born about 1886 in Arbroath, Angus, Scotland. His parents were John Ritchie and Agnes Sturrock.

George married Annie Davidson in 1912 in Arbroath and went on the have 3 sons (that I know about) all born in Arbroath  -
      1. James Davidson Ritchie  b. 1912
      2. George Herschell Ritchie Jr  b. 02 Feb 1914
      3. Eric Herschell Ritchie  b. 1917 ( I have found him mentioned as Alexander in one record)

They all migrated to USA in 1927 on Ship Name: Transylvania  and I have found them in Massachusetts.

In the 1930 USA Census -
Event Place: Quincy, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States

Household        Role   Sex              Age   Birthplace
George H Ritchie       Head   Male      43          Scotland    Electric welder - car shapes
Annie Ritchie           Wife   Female 42          Scotland

James D Ritchie           Son   Male      17          Scotland    Office boy - telephone directory Co
George H Ritchie Jr.   Son   Male      16           Scotland    None
Alexander H Ritchie    Son    Male   13           Scotland    None

In the 1940 USA Census -
Event Place: Ward 2, Quincy, Quincy City, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States

Household            Role   Sex          Age   Birthplace
Annie Ritchie   Head   Female   53   Scotland   Widow

James Ritchie   Son   Male            27   Scotland   Labourer - Sidewalk project
George Ritchie   Son   Male            26   Scotland  ?fitter - Shipyard
Eric Ritchie   Son   Son   Male            23   Scotland   Toolmaker - Shipyard

As Annie is a widow in the 1940 Census I assume George has died between 1930 and 1940 - can't find anything about him during this time.

What happened to Annie after 1940? When/where did she die?

Did any of the sons marry in the USA, have children and stay there or move to another country.

Any information on this family and their lives and occupations in the USA would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Sandi

Angus (Forfarshire) / Re: William Ritchie born 1904 in Arbroath
« on: Tuesday 27 February 18 06:24 GMT (UK)  »
I have read about William's employment (see link above) in the Naval Patrol Service from his enrolment 24/11/1926 to approx. 02/1932 when he asked for a Cert of Discharge.

There is mention of him having an R.N.R. Rating as a Seaman ; Description of voyages - Fishing ; Capacity as a D.H. (assume deck hand).

Mention of H.M. ship & Depot - Spenser (Portsmouth to Arbroath), Victory II ? and Vivid  (Devonport to Arbroath) ;  and Vivid I (Key something to Arbroath).

Parents are John and Elizabeth, which is correct. There is no mention of a wife/name, so assuming he may not have been married at ths stage.

I still have no idea what happened to him after he left this service.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
         Sandi

Hi,
I'm trying to find any information on William Ritchie born 08 Jul 1904 in Arbroath.

   His parent were -
         John Ritchie  b. 02 Sep 1876 ; d. 12 Mar 1970 and
         Elizabeth Anderson Weir b. 21 Feb 1878  ; d. 03 Feb 1956  - both born and died in Arbroath.
They supposedly married 06 Feb 1904 in Dundee but I haven't been able to find any record of this event, though it is stated on Williams birth record in SP.

         They had 7 children as far as I know - William b. 1904; Helen b. 1906; Jessie S b. 1907 ; Margaret M b. 1912 ; Jane A b. 1913 ; John b. 1917 and Harry b. abt 1921.

I am trying to find out any information on William - marriage, children, occupation, death, etc.

Thanks in advance for any information on the above.

Regards,
       Sandi
