Devon / Re: FORD and CHOWN - Plymouth late 1700/1800's

I think the intrigue goes on. Robert Chown married Mary Dyer in 1813. They had several children the last one was born in 1835. I have now found them both in the 1861 census with some of their children  so I am now thinking these are not my William's parents. By coincidence I did find a baptism in Plymouth for a Mary Dyer in 1773 so thought I was on ther correct track, but I think she is a different one. Eleanor Coombs Heathman Ford, I haven't found out where the name Heathman originated but as you say their witnesses were named Heathman, that name entered the family when Eleanor's sister Mary Ann married Thomas Heathman. Within the Chown/Heathman Ford family I also have the following names that I cannot source, Coombs, Horn and Byron although Byron may have been a christian name. They loved different names There are two different Adelaide Heathman Chown's in the extended family. The Ford family came from Burrington in Mid Devon, Eleanor's father Francis Ford married Ann Bolt.

There is a tree on Ancestry which gives William parents from a different area, but William always said he came from Plymouth.

Thank you for your interest and help

Regards, Sue

Hello Ray, as far as I am aware all my Chown family were from Plymouth. My earliest is William Chown said to be born 1816/1818 in Plymouth, however I cannot find a baptism for him so he may have been born elsewhere.

I have a book called "The Bovey Book"  it was published in 2004 and was produced for the Heritage Centre. It has a chapter on the Devon House of Mercy. It is situated behind the parish church and is now apartments. The chapter in the book contains some photographs of the laundry and dining hall. Your library may be able to obtain a copy. I know Bovey Tracey's library has one although the library will be closed for the next three weeks or so for roof replacement.
