Northumberland / Berwick-upon-Tweed freemen burgess rolls
« on: Tuesday 19 October 21 19:01 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know I can access freemen/burgess/apprentice records from the 1700s?

I have a copy of the google book printed in 1796 listing Berwick freemen details but it only includes those alive at the time. I've also been kindly provided with information from a later roll of burgesess, 1834 I think.
I need to access earlier records, from 1720 ish to 1800. I know Berwick archives has records available but won't be able to arrange a visit for the forseeable future
Thanks :)

Thank you very much, I am a little overwhelmed  :)
I have a fair amount of info on Hugh Ross and David Fenwick but will need some time to explore all this information
Once again, thanks

Hi
Wow this is a blast from the past!
His name was John Steavenson and he died 14th April 1895, family lore says he died seal hunting
In 1891 he was lodging on Johnson Street, Victoria City, aged 65 and described as a gentleman
His probate states he was of Victoria, British Colombia. He left about £1500 but was estranged from his family so there may not be a headstone. I said I had details of the cemetery and plot but can't find them now :(
Thanks for any information you can provide

The Common Room / Shaw family All Saints, Newcastle 1600s
« on: Wednesday 14 April 21 17:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi to any one researching this family. I have been given images of an old family bible with lots of entries for this family during the 1600s. The main name I have found is Henry Shaw whose probate is dated 1692, Henry was a barber surgeon and relatively wealthy judging by his will inventory. His will etc can be found on the Durham wills database and I believe his eldest son was John. I haven't researched the family other than this.
I was hoping to find someone researching the family so I can pass on the images
Feel free to move this post to a more suitable board if demed useful
Christine :)

Hubby has ancestors in Berwick upon Tweed, late 1700s with rellies of theirs in London. One son apprenticed in London to his older brother and married a girl from Newcastle at St James in London 1788. My guess is they travelled by boat, it took a few days according to my research

Hi John G Robinson
I haven't visited the forum for months now (full time working again so less time for hobbies)
I wonder if your Wilton was also named after the Wilton that died.
The name has been passed down my family too, my great grandfather & grandfather had it as their first name, my uncle and his son have it as a middle name. It is certainly an uncommon one
I hope you are enjoying the forum, there are some very knowledgable & experienced folk on here

After my grandmother passed in 2005 we discovered a carrier bag full of old family photos, among them a wedding photo which was clearly very old. I felt then that such things should be preserved for future generations and so started my journey. What a fascinating & emotional journey it has been  :)
