Marriage on 4 September 1861 of Charles NASH and Eliza SHERWAN (more likely KERWAN) has been traced to Calton, Glasgow, Scotland.

The groom's parents are recorded as William and Jane NASH nee BYE.

Rosie - I'm inclined to agree with you that we can dispense with SHERWAN. We are then left with KERWAN (Scottish interpretation/translation) versus the variant of KERWIN which is recorded by the GRO for 9 of her children born in England. There was also one of her children born in England where her maiden name is recorded by the GRO as KARWIN.

I've yet to find Eliza or parents in the Scottish or Irish (KIRWAN) census.

If Eliza was born in Ireland (1911 England Census refers) and migrated to Scotland before settling in England from about the mid-1860s it is no wonder that her spoken maiden name was interpreted/recorded differently.

Many thanks to everyone for their research - there is much for me to review.

Charles NASH was medically discharged from the army while stationed in Belfast in 1864.

The 1861 marriage in Glasgow looks very promising since Charles was stationed there at that time but begs the question what was Elizabeth's maiden name - KERWAN/KERWIN/SHERWAN?

Wexford / Elizabeth KERWIN of County Wexford

I would appreciate help to find the birth/baptism and marriage of my ggg grandmother who is believed to be Elizabeth KERWIN (GRO birth records for many of her children refers) born about 1838 in County Wexford, according to the 1911 English Census.

Elizabeth married Charles NASH (born Chiseldon, Wiltshire, England in 1835) about 1860. No such marriage has been found in the UK or Ireland. NASH is sometimes transcribed as NAISH.

Charles was in the British Army (76th Foot) and stationed in Belfast, Dublin and possibly Waterford in the early 1860s.

The couple lived in Radstock, Somerset, England from at least the 1871 Census and had 11 children.

JJ,

Thank you for the link - GRO revealing free info is a surprise!

Joseph E. is listed in the census as one of mine.

I will investigate the other siblings.

Strong evidence that KERWIN is the maiden name I've been looking for.

Many thanks for all your research on my behalf.

Gordon

JJ - please let me know what your source is that reveals the mother's maiden name of KERWIN for the births of Charles William and Sarah Ann?

I was digesting your very kind/prompt information by responding to each one separately.

Charles had a son Charles W., age 17 (ie born about 1864) in Chiseldon according to the 1881 census.

My Sarah Ann could well have been born 1862 in Farnham since that is very close to Aldershot where Charles was stationed with the army about that time.

Both sightings make their mother's maiden very likely to be that of KERWIN.

Many thanks.

It seems my search continues for Sarah Ann's birth/baptism since she did marry George Nicholas CRISP (my mother's maiden name) on 29 June 1890 at St James, Bath. The recently purchased marriage certificate confirmed Charles (occupation painter) is her father.

The other Sarah Ann may still prove to be an ancestor.

Thank you all for your prompt replies - much for me to consider.

I omitted to say that there is the possibility that the baptism on 30 March 1862 of a Sarah Ann(e) NASH at nearby Liddington is my ancestor. However, her parents are a George and Mary. Charles had a younger brother George so perhaps she was living/being brought up as their own (1871 Census refers) since her father (but what of mother Elizabeth?) was away in the army?
