Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Re: Finding Gertrude Goldsmith

Hi

I've come into this discussion quite late. There is a Stephen Goldsmith in the school register for Brighton Road School, St Helier. He started school on 28th Feb 1951. His father was Harold and they were living at 29 Garden Lane, St Helier. Date of birth was 24th Feb 1945 in "London". He had transferred from St Mark's School. I can't see a birth in FreeBMD for that date, only one in Mar 1944 and one in Mar 1946. The latter father's surname is Goldsmith and mother's previous name Goldsmith(?).

Have you seen the occupation registration cards for the Goldsmith's living at Sea View, Millbrook?

You're correct. The transcription says 1812 but the document says 1802.

Thanks for you help. Just need to narrow down his parents!

I think there is a transcription error. The FindMyPast record "Britain, Merchant Seamen, 1835-1857" has a date of birth of 12 Jan 1812 (not 02 Jan 1802 you'd written) or he quoted the wrong date. This birth date does not tie up with other records.

Yes, Thomas George was Thomas's son. Interesting the name George is carried through although this may just be the King!!

Hi Jon

Thanks for the information. It's good to know that we have been working along the same lines.

I too had noted there were very few Knowlson's in the London area. They seem to be more prominent in Yorkshire. I'd seen the marriage of George Knowlson and Sophia Miles 28th Aug 1793 in St Marylebone and at least 5 children although there were two Johns, one in 1795 and another in 1796 so assumed one hadn't survived.

It was very interesting to see you had found a birth date for Thomas as 12th January 1802. Can I ask what your source was please as I can't find it? I seem to have everything relating to Thomas except that one fact.

This does however raise one concern. Jane's baptism is 7th Mar 1802 in Shoreditch on FindMyPast. If they are brother and sister, why weren't they baptized together? The dates seem to be too close for comfort! Could they be twins!!

Hi

Looking for a baptism of a Thomas Knowlson anytime from 1800 to 1810. Served in the Navy and Coast Guards throughout his life. His age varies depending on where you look!

Although he married and lived in Devon and had children, he gave his place of birth as Bishops Gate (see 1861 census).

Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, the Registry Office is not open to the public at present so if you really want to see the certificate you will have to order (an expensive) copy. You will need the following - St Helier deaths, volume 63 page 29.

If you give them a call/email. they may well give you the information you require.

She would not have been in Jersey during the occupation so would not have been in Jersey prior to 1945

Hi

If you look at the 1921 census and search on just Bideau you will find a Mary Le Bideau born in Guernsey in 1895 but living in St Saviour, Jersey. I haven't looked at the detail of the record.

Also, remember the 1921 Census for Scotland isn't out until later this year.
