Sussex / Location of Farm
« on: Wednesday 19 July 06 15:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
Have found a relative of mine in a trade directory for Sussex 1905. He is a farmer at Lower Cowdens Mayfield    S.O.
Does any one know if Lower Cowdens still exists, I suspect its a farm, also what does the S.O. mean .
Thank you in advance.

Hi Leigh
I know its a long time back of your original posting, came across it when looking for something else, and you may have the answer by now but back in the 1950 [a bit after your relation]I was escort to a stoker that had a prison sentance and then was discharged, we had to take him to Shepton Mallet, which was a tri service prison, hope this is of help.

Sussex / V.A.D.s
« on: Tuesday 30 May 06 20:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
Can anyone please help
I am trying to find out more about a ggaunt who was a V.A.D. during WW1 she was Harriet Alice HOOK nee BAKER and lived at Gardners St. Herstmonceux.
The Red Cross and St. Johns say they have no records for her,but they tell me that the detachment No. for Herstmonceux was Sussex/58 and Hailsham was Sussex/100 which is only about 3 miles away. Also there was a Red Cross Hospital in Hailsham which was affiliated to Eastbourne Military Hospital.
Is it possible that being military Hospitals they have the records of staff?  any other ideas as too where I can look for this info.
Thank you for any help.

Sussex / Re: Records for Lewes Gaol?
« on: Wednesday 12 April 06 17:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
I too am looking for details on a prisoner in Lewis gaol in 1871, ESRO told me that they do not hold anything on prisoners by name. As a thought on the original  message, there used to be a Naval Prison in Lewis but I don't know any dates that it was in use.
