One Name Studies: T to Z / Re: Whitehouse index
« on: Wednesday 31 October 07 23:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi have looked at this site and found it very interesting as I do have a Whitehouse line in my tree,. However, All the links just take you to "WORD" documents, and the only link shown on those will obviously ..not work.. ,
Googling the unworkable links takes you to the "One name Studies Guild "where you have to pay to register...
I smell a con...

The Common Room / Re: GenesReunited - getting replies

I have 2 nieces who began their trees on Genes, after putting in details of our family, they did not become paying members. I have sent them the odd message which they have never received as they have since changed their email addresses. They haven't bothered to inform GenesReunited of this change as the interest was lost as soon as they realised they had to pay subscriptions etc.
I know all this because they live close to me and we see each other on a regular basis. However, the information remains on GenesReunited for all to see as this adds quantity to the genes databank.

I do suggest you keep trying though; In another case, I messaged somebody every month for a year and they did eventually reply. It seems they had a renewed interest in genealogy after simply not bothering with it and ignoring messages from GenesReunited regarding contacts.

I have read posts both on here and on other messageboards from people who have said that as unsubscribed members of GenesR they cannot reply to contact messages about their tree.

I don't know for sure if this is actually the case.  I had my tree on GenesR for over a year before I paid a subscription, and had contact messages during that time  - which I was able to reply to.

However as every now and again I see yet another person saying that they can't reply to contacts because they haven't paid, it does look as though things might have changed since I started subscribing. Or at least that there is some problem with replying if you aren't a paid member.

Unfortunately there is no way of knowing whether the person you are contacting has paid or not.

I have just had a message from a non paying member, so they must be able to reply. However, she cannot view my tree though I can view hers.

The Common Room / Re: How will you know if I'm gone?

Not morbid, but realistic.  I've suggested to my family that we put favorite website addresses and passwords on paper and keep safe somewhere - just in case. :)

It would be awful not to be able to notify friends if the worst did happen.

Monica

Not just friends but all those genealogy sites we subscribe to.  Your subscription is renewed automatically each year if it is not cancelled.

wouldn't worry too much about that one ..first thing the kids do is sort out your bank account.. ;)

I think I might give up and go South.
Just a thought but if we're all related to God does that mean we're all related to the Devil as well. :o

Of course.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Lofthouse Yorkshire
« on: Saturday 13 October 07 01:29 BST (UK)  »
Yes, Sorry I didn't explain that very well. I was trying to say how confusing it can be when there are more than one of the same name especially as Cleveland use to span both Yorkshire and Durham.
Easington in Cleveland North Yorkshire although only appearing as a small Village is apparently a wide Parish which includes Loftus ( original name Lofthouse ) and is only 8 miles from Lythe. So all areas mentioned by "Origins" are in very close proximity and the family haven't moved very far at all. its only like walking the length of Blackpool promenade.

I did find a John Rodgers birth on the IGI " August 1785 Lythe"

I have an ancestor who stated his place of birth as Lofthouse on one census and then the following census said Lofthouse Cleveland, so I too presumed it would be Loftus which is indeed in Cleveland.
I found his birth on the IGI in nearby  Easington which is sometimes shown as Yorkshire and sometimes as Durham. Maybe worth another look on IGI.
