That's the one I was thinking of  - it looks about 200yds from Mill Hill East Station, which fits in with the card.

Cheers.

Hi Casalguidi ,

No, I don't think so. Hendon Cemetery is about a mile to the south east of Mill Hill Cemetery.

But thanks for the tips and locating etc. - it will help if I ever make the trip myself, which I probably will if no one else happens to be passing. It's a long trip from Yorkshire though !

Cheers

Hi,

My father has found a card detailing the burial place of his grandfather. It says;

Hendon Park Cemetery, Mill Hill, N.W.7  Christopher St.John Wright, no. of grave 49025. G.4.  The reverse side of this certificate says the cemetery is situated within about 200 yards of Mill Hill East Station, on the L.N.E.Railway and is 12 minutes' walk from Finchley, - Church End Station, L.N.E.Railway.

Originally I was going to ask "is this in Mill Hill or Hendon' but having looked on multimap I can see exactly where it is. So I guess the only, really cheeky, question left is ; "does anyone ever go to this cemetery and would they like to hunt for a grave for me ...... " ?!? I don't even know when he died (although probably 1920's or 30's) so it would be really useful if someone happened to be passing by .....?

Also, as a general point, if you have the grave number how easy is it to find them does anyone know? All I've ever done before it wandered around aimlessly till I've found (or not found) someone.

That's excellent, thanks a lot.

It's also interesting as her daughter Elizabeth married a William Pritchard of Longtown, possibly a cousin therefore!

Thanks again for your help.

Herefordshire Lookup Requests / Birth Lookup - Clodock/Dulas/Longtown area 1830/40's
« on: Wednesday 05 July 06 20:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone help ?!? I would like to ascertain my great great great grandmothers maiden name! She was called Elizabeth and was born in ~1802 in Ewyas Harold. At somepoint she married George Powell (no hypen - that came later!) who was born around the same time (only have him on '41 census so hard to be sure - was '30' then) somewhere in Herefordshire. He was a farmer. It occurs to me that if anyone could find any of the children's births then this would, hopefully, have Elizabeth's maiden name on it. The children were;

George Powell (b~1833 Dulas)
Elizabeth Powell (b~1837 Ewyas Harold)
Sophia Powell (b~1839 Dulas)
Ambrose Powell (b~1841 Dulas)
Augustine Powell (b~1844 Dulas)

All DoB's extrapolated from later census so may be +/- . I can find odds and sods for the post '37 children - but districts seem to vary a lot and it's hard to be sure I have the correct person. In fact I have trouble in general with this locale and the Monmouth/Herefordshire, Wales/England conflicts.
Wrt the possible birth index entries the only one I think is perhaps correct is Augustine but then, Murphy's Law, it's very hard to read the Volume for this entry, although I think perhaps it is 26.

Can anyone help or, if not, give me any guidance on other avenues to explore ?

Many thanks.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Re: MI Request for Middleton

Hi,

Yes, sorry, I 'get' the Mary Holme's link now. How can you be sure you have the correct Thomas? Ditto Sarah. Scott/Mary/Thomas/Abraham all common names I'm afraid. A tricky one I'm afraid, I'm not sure I can help much, although the balance of probabilities would indicate it IS Mary Holmes, it's hard to be sure on what you've discovered so far.

But I'm sure you knew that !

Regards

Hi,

Leeds and Bradford are adjacent cities - think Newark and Jersey City, these days it is virtually impossible to tell where one finishes and the other starts, although this will have been less so 100 years ago.

Leeds is about 40 miles W of Warter.

Which Middleton have you identified as the one? There is a village Middleton near Pickering (about 20 miles North of Warter) and another just north of Ilkley (which itself is N of Leeds) and another in south Leeds near Morley.  If it IS the census record that I've found then it will be the last one - Middleton, Morley and  Rothwell are all close together in South Leeds.

www.multimap.co.uk might help you get your bearings.

I also saw the Sculcoates entry and thought about it, but it didn't tie in as cleanly. Sculcoates (part of Hull) not too far from Warter, but quite a way from Leeds - about 60 miles.

Death records - well yes, but there were 39 Mary Scott's dying in Yorkshire in circa 1856/7/8. One was in Bradford, but it's a bit of a long shot - it's a VERY common name.

Yes the marriage I found was in Bradford, but as they're on different pages I don't see how they can have married each other.

Maybe the easiest thing would be to ask Sherry how/why she's determined that Mary's maiden name was Holme - she must have had a good reason for putting that, that seems the obvious next steps.

Must go to bed now !

All the best.

Thanks for the quick answers.

I think you're possibly correct - various members of his family had pubs, including his father. But 10 years earlier he was working in a drapers shop and 10 years later he was a Builder Clerk (for his Uncle my Great Great Grandfather) so it doesn't really fit in in that respect - but I think you're correct.

Again - many thanks.

Stephen. (apologies for numerous typos and spheling mishtakes in op!).

Hi,

Can anyone work out what this occupation says? The bit under Night something Brewery and above the crossed out one.

The middle work might be common I suppose. Any ideas ?

TIA.
