Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Water-damaged census return
« on: Sunday 23 September 18 20:42 BST (UK)  »
It's good to know the surname is Lomas.

Can you make out the wife's name or Samuel's occupation?

Even a child's name would help...

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Water-damaged census return SOLVED THANK YOU
« on: Sunday 23 September 18 19:34 BST (UK)  »
I am making a list of Samuel Lomases who were adults mid 19th century, to help with a longstanding problem.

I have convinced myself the the attached, part of Manchester water-damaged page (Piece: 2220; Folio: 230; Page: 6) has a Samuel LOMAS as head of the household.

There is a Samuel LOMAS on the same street (Dark Lane) in the 1841 census (HO107/578/Book 3/Page 1).

There are plenty of Samuel Lomases in the 1861 census who might match but more information from the 1851 (eg wife's name) would help.

Please would you take a look at the attached and tell me what you can make out.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / SORTED Chapel-en-le-Frith marriage, May 1837
« on: Sunday 03 December 17 19:59 GMT (UK)  »
Sorted courtesy of the appearance of the parish register images on the internet!

The witnesses were William BRAMWELL and Joshua LOMAS. The bride had a living brother called William. And  John LOMAS b 19 Jan 1813 Sparrowpit (chr 14 Feb 1813 Chinley) has a brother Joshua; there are no other Joshua LOMASes in the neighbourhood.

Thank goodness the witness wasn't James/Thomas/&c LOMAS!

Problem solved!!

Yes, Brinksey Banks would be Brinksway; I can't think of any alternative.

My wife lived her early years on Brinksway and is very proud that her bath (galvanised tub) can be seen hanging on the outside of her then house in one of the scenes in A Taste of Honey!

... believe that John who married Hannah is the son of John [MARCHINGTON] and Betty Potts. That John being the son of Joseph [MARCHINGTON] & Amy Goodwin, and that Joseph being the son of John. I have been way for a while (my Mum died) but will get back into it, but I am fairly sure on my logic...

Hi Sharon -please tell why you are inclined to the above parentage of John MARCHINGTON b abt 1802, married to Hannah HALLAM -I suspect you are correct but I haven't found clues.

Their headstone inscription in the burial ground at St Thomas:

In remembrance of
JOHN MARCHINGTON
of HALLSTEADS
who died June 26th 1869
aged 67 years
also HANNAH his wife
who died Dec 23rd 1874
aged 74 years
Un-numbered years of bliss
I to my sheep will give
and while my throne unshaken stands
shall all My chosen live.

Transcribed by Marguerite Bellhouse, Jayne Mellor, Anne McCulloch & Jim & Jill Dunn, collated and published by Beryl & Guy Martin

There are abstracts of the following wills/administrations: Thomas MARCHINGTON (proved 1781), Thomas MARCHINGTON (proved 1833) Henry MARCHINGTON (proved 1858) at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dusk/chapelwills.html#m1

These have tantalising information but I don't think clinch the ancestry of the John who married Hannah.

I am interested in this couple and their ancestry, so if you find out more, please let me know.

Cheshire / Re: Samuel HALLAM b abt 1810 ?Stockport s/o John & Mary

Samuel is in the 1845 Stockport Directory: candlewick manufacturer Ridgeway La Mill, House Leigh St [Stockport]; brother Ephraim and his mother Mary as cotton spinners.

Interestingly, there are newspaper announcements (eg Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser 17 May 1845) of the dissolution of the partnership of M and E Hallum cotton candlewick manufactureres of Stockport. This would be mother Mary and brother Ephraim.

In 1846 Ephraim, who had been a councillor, stood again as a candidate councillor for St Thomas' Ward but was not elected (but was re-elected in 1855). Maybe a whiff of scandal associated with the family?

It looks like the mid 1840s was an important time for these Hallams but I am unsure what was going on.

My 'take' is that Samuel got into some kind of trouble (something to do with his marriage or maybe he was the Samuel the soldier-thief), emigrated and changed his name. We'll probably not find out.
