The Common Room / Forenames: Would a Mary Elizabeth be known as Lucy?
« on: Wednesday 22 July 09 16:28 BST (UK)  »

Anyone know please?

(I thought Mary Elizabeth was commonly known as Polly)

Hi Jo,

The mother was born 1877 in Barnsley District, probably Platts Common (Hoyland).  I found her on 1881 census down as a visitor in Platts Common and I suspect she was an orphan.  I don't have subs for Ancestry so can't look her up on 1891 census.  She would have been 14 then anyway and no doubt drudging away as someone's servant and possibly living in their home.

Would you mind checking her whereabouts on the 1891 Census?  Minnie Agnes Cook, b. 1877, area Barnsley.  Father was James Cook, Coal Miner.

Have just had confirmation of the birth of yet another child to this couple.  An Agnes born and died 1894.

I think I may have cracked 'Lucy's' birth.  Suspect she was registered as Mary Elizabeth.  Am waiting for confirmation though.

Poor Minnie Cook.  Born 1877, married aged 16, died aged 23 and a child born almost every year of the marriage it seems.  (There are 4 births confirmed so far).

Oh lord, just realised the last birth I know of was 1899 (the Catherine of the Sheffield Nuns Home).  Minnie died Sept qtr 1900 so there's room for yet another birth before she died in Sept qtr 1900.  Her early death is the reason the three girls are in the Sheffield home in 1901.

I hardly dare look on FreeBMD....

What a tragic life.  I feel quite upset.

Thanks again,
Eagleye

Hi Jo,

I was wondering if you would reply.

It goes very slowly most of the time as you will know, but it's rewarding when suspicions turn out to be founded.

Have only just confirmed that Catherine was indeed Michael Halpin's daughter.  I had serious doubts the three girls were 'mine' and got distracted with other trails.  Still no trace of Lucy's birth.

I now suspect Michael Halpin had 6 children in all - when I only ever knew of 2.  Thanks very much for your help.

Hope you are making progress too!

Regards,
Eagleye

Could someone please check the following page to RG13/4367 42 200 on the 1901 census?

The area is Sheffield and it's St Vincent's Roman Catholic Home, Sisters of Charity Nuns.

There are 3 Halpin sisters at the very bottom of the page and I would like to know if there are any other Halpins listed overleaf.

Thank you

Waterford / Re: Tallow - Birth or Catholic baptism records?
« on: Saturday 18 April 09 18:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi Leanne,

Just thought I'd comment that for a catholic baptism in Tallow there is nothing for it but to visit the NLI in Dublin to see the parish records on microfilm - or commission expensive research.

I too have an ancestor born Tallow 1830 and wrote over a year ago to the current Tallow catholic parish priest.  No reply.  In February 2009 I wrote to another priest responsible for several parishes including Tallow.  He did reply and said he'd check but that was the last I heard.  I expect, with the best will in the world, they have little time to dedicate to chasing Irish ancestors and I certainly won't pester.

It took me ages to find their addresses on the net, but still, at least I tried.

Hi Alan b,

I don't understand what they're on about then.

Are you sure you were able to view your images from 'my records'?

Maybe you didn't delete the ones from FindMyPast too?

I noticed that some of mine are FindMyPast though I've only logged in to 1911.

Puzzled.
