My grandfather, Patrick Mitchell was born in Dublin in 1870.
He was born in the parish of St. Thomas, according to his army papers.
He married in St James church in 1903. In order to do this, he had to get a special dispensation from the Pope to marry in the Catholic church.
As the children were all raised as Catholics, they knew nothing of their fathers' religion until they were clearing out the attic after his death and found the dispensation.
The church register of the marriage says nothing at all about any dispensation, difference of religion of the husband, etc.,
That is all I know so far.
