My information is really limited ~ hence all the blanks!!  I think he must have been a seaman, yes and travelled the route often.

Thanks for responding to my request.   I have now discovered the following:

Harry was in fact named Henry (possibly Stephen or Stephenson) at birth.   He was born in Chertsey (UK) September quarter of 1882.

In the 1891 UK census he was living in Warfield, Berkshire and his birthplace is given as Windlesham, Surrey (which isn't too far away from Chertsey!) with his parents John William and Mary Ann Carter.

Harry/Henry was crushed to death between the wharf and a ship having fallen overboard at Melbourne Docks.   It was possibly a merchant ship sailing between Australia and the UK.

Any help you can give would be very much appreciated.   Thanks.

Australia / CARTER ~ Vic. death look-up please
« on: Thursday 16 October 08 13:40 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me please with the following:

I believe HARRY CARTER (b in the UK) was killed in Melbourne in the early 1920's.   There is a possible link to St. Kilda's, but I've found nothing on that cemetery site.

I shall be over in Melbourne in two weeks' time and would very much like to try and find Harry's grave so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, Suzi

Does anybody know Sandhurst very well?  Just thinking of somewhere else that might have cause for a "parade" of this nature and the military college springs to mind.

Of course, if it is a victory parade and not funeral then it could be anywhere!  :(

I don't think it's Sandhurst.   Nothing in the picture resembles anything I've seen there except for the flat streets.   I'll have a much closer look next time I'm there.

Cheshire / Re: cheshire asylumn

Cheshire County Asylum was founded in 1868 and below is a link which gives the history.   It also mentions Chester Asylum.

The name of the street coming from Eton High Street and over the bridge into Windsor is Thames Street which goes past the side of the castle and leads straight into High Street and on into Sheet Street.

I don't think there's a Rose and Crown in Windsor, but there is one in Winkfield!   However, I don't think the picture is Winkfield as this is a town, not a small village.

Europe / Leonard Lewis LOHDEN - Died Switzerland
« on: Wednesday 08 October 08 09:31 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone assist please with finding the whereabouts of LEONARD LEWIS LOHDEN?

He was born in London, England in 1891.
I believe he died in Switzerland on 12 April 1920 and his body was interred on 14 April. The big question is ~ where?

Any suggestions as to where to search for the burial site would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Anglesey Lookup Requests / Re: Paton family
« on: Wednesday 01 October 08 21:37 BST (UK)  »
That is helpful, it confirms what I had read in the census images on Scotlands people. I think that Lollroad should be Tollroad, and that is where Jane Paton was born on 8 Sep 1831.

Is it reasonable to assume that Catherine and George Brownlee were married?

Tim

I've found one more thing for you:

John Paton married Jean Aiton 22 July 1789 Kilmarnock, Ayrshire

I would say 'yes' I do think that's a reasonable assumption.   However, I've not found a marriage for them ~ yet ............

What I have found though is this:

Cathrine (spelt like that!) Paton b 7 May 1826;  christened 21 May 1826 United Presbyterian, Muckhart, Perthshire.
Father Robert Paton;  Mother Cathrine Marquis.

Jean Paton christened Dec 1821 (as above);  Father Robert Paton

John Paton christened Jan 1824 (as above);  Father Robert Paton

John I have already given you and this certainly looks as though he had at least two sisters.

At the moment I have not come across Robet's parentage.
