The Lighter Side / Re: My Family At War - BBC
« on: Tuesday 04 November 08 11:11 GMT (UK)  »
Watched this last night and was terribly moved by the whole thing.
The Somme was such a tradgedy and to think that Dan Snow's family so involved. No wonder he felt so emotional. We all know as family historians how wrapped up we get in a ancestors lives - and here we find a story that is truly incredible. One suspects that as a historian Dan already had a good idea of his g Grandfathers role in the battle, but to stand at the memorial and have that driven home to you must have been shocking for him.
There is no glory in war. What a great programe BBC and if just one or two people now understand what poppy day really means, then a job well done.

The Lighter Side / Re: Remembrance Day - November 11

I shall be remembering Arthur Yates died aged only tweny-one, in the Somme, France. Son of Arthur Du Pasteur Yates and of Clare Yates. London.
They never found his body and is only remembered on Pier and Face 9 C and 13 C. at THIEPVAL.
Just one of 17 million to give their lives in just a few short years.
The tradgedy of war.
