Canada Resources / Kent County Diaries
« on: Wednesday 15 February 17 06:40 GMT (UK)  »
I have my great great grandmother's diary for the year of 1875 (Ida Handy). She lived in Howard township and in her diaries mentions many names of both family and friends who lived in the surrounding areas. Not necessarily in detail, mostly just their coming and goings. I have most of this transcribed so can do lookups easily.
Some surnames of people mentioned: Atkinson, Baldwin, Bryant, Bury, Cavers, Colls, Davis, Delong, Downie, Fairchild, Handy, Hicks, Kennedy, MacFarlane, McAllister, McPhail (Peter & Neil tried for stealing clover), Miles, Mosher, Newcome, Oakes, Purvis, Ransom, Roome, Scarlet, Simons, Stewart, Storey, Teetzel, Turner, Van Allen (Dr.), Watson, Westlake, Willins (?), Willson

I also have my great great grandfather's diaries from about 1882 - 1913. He was politically active, ran the local post office and newspaper.  He was also appointed 'Issuer of Marriages' in 1885, so I have a book of marriages he recorded from 1885 - 1895. Too many names to mention at this point.

I hope to be submitting both sets of diaries to the Rural Ontario Diary project soon, so eventually there will be transcriptions of both :)

Canada / Re: bryant family
« on: Monday 06 February 17 04:30 GMT (UK)  »
I have two Bryants born in Quebec mid 1800s or so - who married into my family - possible siblings and possible parents John Bryant and Ann Seymore. Know very little about them at this point, but if they appear in your tree let me know. I have photos of them :)

Edit: forgot to add their names: Alice & Alvin Bryant

Oh thank you Runkitty! Owe you one! 😀
The article is a biography of my 3rd great grandfather Collins Handy, and I understand there is a photo of him as well which should help find it. March 12,1898.

Hi,

What article do you need??  I can take a look for you :)

Hello,
I don't usually ask for help getting access to subscription based services, but I am really hoping to get an article from the Globe and Mail of March 12 1898 and I am a bit stuck because although it seems the archives are available online, it is only through libraries or a university with a proquest subscription. My local library does not and I don't have any access through a university.

Would appreciate any help or ideas!

Dublin / Re: Grangegorman Mental Hospital

If anyone is still looking, I have managed to get a relative's records from Richmond District Lunatic Asylum (Grangegorman). They are now held by Phoenix Care Centre.
Not sure if I can post someone's direct email but you can pm me and I can give you details.

Thank you Wiggy. Still no certainty where this was taken. The original scan is very yellow, while the spots are still black which is why I thought it could be ink. Hard to tell though.

I've been looking over this photo the last couple days trying to find more clues. I've been comparing it to other photos, including the sister's wedding party. If the photo was taken before Feb 1908 then likely it could be the two younger brothers. If after, then the fellow on the right may be my great grandfather (the eldest) instead. We have several photos of him in later years. My dad thinks it is him while it doesn't jump out at me at all. But my dad might be the better judge.

I think I will see if I can get a higher resolution scan to see if it helps me determine if this could be a younger version of my great grandfather. I might need another pair of eyeballs then!

PS one thing I just remembered - the fur throw on the back of the two chairs looks like they also made an appearance in the wedding photo.... which still points to the back garden in England!

Ok!
You prompted me to look again through my old photos Wiggy.
I found the attached photo of one of the sisters. The inscription says it was taken in the back garden of Aberdeen Villa (the parents home) before she married.

The fur throw on the chair looks like it could be the same as that on the chair of my gg grandfather.
That would place this photo in their back garden probably.

Then it suddenly occurred to me that Ida married in 1908. So I had a look through the wedding party photo and neither of these fellows really jump out at me as being in it. Possibly the one on the right is but not sure.

Good job Wiggy!

It's not easy cleaning up all those smudges and what looks like ink marks. (I wondered if the picture had been tucked inside a letter with wet ink).

I had noted there were some rather large trees that I haven't noticed in my other family back garden photos! But it still hadn't occurred to me that the photo could have been taken anywhere but England, no. I had never heard that the parents had traveled anywhere but that doesn't meant that they didn't. I've never really looked. But that would leave a question of who a second young gentleman could be.

Thank you Jim,
It does seem to fit with what I was thinking.
To fill in more details:
The youngest brother Rudolph went to Argentina in Feb 1908 where he married and had one daughter. He would have been 23 in 1908. He did return it seems briefly in late 1913, for what reason I don't know.

The other brother Herbert left England and settled in Canada some time between 1905 and 1911. Probably closer to the later date. In 1908 he would have been 28. I have not found any indication that he ever returned to England, but the thought occurred to me that if both brothers came back for some important reason in 1913, perhaps this photo was taken then. But more likely it was before they both left and judging from your comments that is probably the case (if it is indeed them).

The casual poses made me feel these must all be family members. The man standing in back looks a bit out of place to me, somehow. If it is them, I wish I could tell which was which. I have a general "gut" feeling but I have nothing to base it on, I can't even tell how old they look.
