Family History Beginners Board / Re: Pickup family of Accrington

I can't believe there are so many John and James Pickups.  Several in Rossendale.  I'm wondering if I did a DNA test if it could be narrowed down.  I know it has to be a male member of the line and I have 2 brothers that would do it.  So far it all works out to dead ends.  John Pickups daughter Hannah married Thomas Woolrich and I even have a detailed description of their house, called Brant House, and can't find much more than one census record for them.  Such elusive people.  Thank you. Maxine

I have an old letter from a relative who says the Pickup family owned a staging post between Scotland and England, name was Laurence, Lolly of the lane. That isn't of any help to me yet.  I know my John Pickup dyed cotton and owned a factory but he moved around so much, I can't get a grip on him.  I'm finding  James Pickup but he was a miner and that doesn't seem to fit.  Seems like my John would come from a family in the textile industry not mining.  I think I must be getting close.  I'm so glad to get the marriage of John and Hannah Lord even though she isn't my line.  I'm from his second marriage to Isabell Fletcher Crichton.  I still find the marriage record on Ancestry for the Hannah Lord marriage.  I google all kinds of crazy things just for a hint but I can't tie it all together.

I have run the gammet on this name and tried all kinds of things.  I tried Rochdale, Rossendale, Blackpool, Methley, Gomersal, Birstall, all with no results.  I came up with the Lord name for his first wife Hannah because of the name of a "brother in law" John Lord on a census.  The dates of birth were all different also.  I tried several names of fathers thinking I could work it backwards and that didn't work either.  So I'm just as shocked as you that I could put in Accrington (I thought it was in close proximity) and got some answers.  I'm so excited, I can't wait to plug it all in and see what else I can find. Maybe I'll find the Lawrence Pickup, who was Johns grandfather.  Thank you all so much.  I'm blown away!  Back to Rochdale!  I live in Michigan and didn't have enough information to send for any certificates.  I do now, thanks to you all.  Maxine :-*

I have been looking for about 20 years for my John Pickup who I believe was born in Lancashire about 1819 from the census records I can find.  He was married to Hannah Lord about 1841 and then to Isabell Fletcher Crichton about 1875. So I can find him in the 1841 census but he's already married, so that doesn't help me find his parents.  I know his greatgrandfather was named Lawrence and another grandfather was James Pickup, but that's not much help as there are so many Pickups!  and I thought it was an unusual name!  Any help would be so appreciated.
