Oh, you know, I may have been looking at the wrong one. I'll take another look, and you're right, a lookup request would be a good idea.

Ooh, I have used this search site before, but never the record search pilot. It's helpful, thank you. I don't think that this is the match, however, because the birth date (1812) is off. It makes research difficult when one's ancestor a. has such a common name and b. moves around a lot. Thanks, though!

Yes, that is helpful! Thanks for your reply. I've seen both Hodges and Sillis used for Sarah, and I am not sure which is which. Or if it's both. (As Emma is referred to as a Smith and Kennett because of her mother's marriages.)

I'm now going after Emma's father, George Smith, and her mother Harriet. I can find zero information on Harriet's family. I think they were married around 1837-1839 in Kent but I don't have records yet have records for that. If you stumble upon anything to do with them, let me know!

Thanks again for your help.

Thank you so much for your reply! I emailed you, just to let you know. (In case hotmail sends it to your junk box.)

Are you still around jzbross? (I realize you posted this two years ago.)

My family of Chapells and Smiths was located in the Milton Sittingbourne area around that time, and one Mary Ann Chapell married a Richard Rossiter there in 1837. Let me know if you've found anymore information, because I have been wanting to find some myself!

I have a Richard Rossiter b. 1813 Milton, who married one of my great great greats, Mary Ann Chapell in 1837 in Sittingbourne...

Does this match anyone's Richard Rossiter?

Thank you very much for your reply! Yes, I wondered if mariner meant they actually went out to see rather than up the canals. I'm Canadian and not so clear on English geography, so your comment on that was helpful. Thanks for the tips! I have for the most part been structuring my research on the family, rather than the mariner occupation, but I thought I follow this avenue too.

Hmmm, is this thread still active?

I've been trying to pinpoint whether I have Romany links in my tree, and in the process I have uncovered some mariner/boatman connections. I really don't know too much about canal men, nor which canals my ancestors frequented, but I do know that they often appear to reside in Milton by Sittingbourne. Here are some more specifics:

William Chapell b. 1803 in Milton is listed as a mariner in the 1861 census. His wife is Sarah Sillis b. 1813. Their son, James Chapell, b. 1842, is listed as a brickmaker. He later marries Emma Smith (b. 1847 in Hoo, Kent), daughter of George (b. 1812, Hoo) and Harriet Smith (b. 1816, or so, in Stoke,) and I believe her brother, George Smith b. 1839 Hoo is listed as a boatman in a later census... (at least one of the Smiths was.) He also lives with a mariner, Benjamin Redshaw, in the 1871 census.

Does anyone have any links to boatmen near Milton/Sittingbourne, or know which canals run by there? Also, do you know if there is a link between brick moulding/making and boats? Because a few of the same people in my tree have been listed as both.

Any help would be much appreciated!

You know, I think that's him! Thank you sooo much! That lead led me to find him all the way through to 1901!! George Sr. still at large, though. I feel he died...but I just can't find the death records.
